Impact of Economic Globalization on World Economy Section C The purpose of ecotourism is to engage tourists in low impact, non-consumptive environments in order to maintain species, habitats and cultures as well as further the local economy. While some ecotourism projects can support such claims, many have failed to achieve the intended goals. It is sometimes overlooked that although ecotourism is meant for small groups, even a modest increase in population, however temporary, puts extra pressure on the local environment. Although ecotourists claim to be environmentally concerned, they rarely acknowledge how their routine life like eating, drinking or even toilet using are all part of threats to local ecological systems.” Nor do ecotourists recognize even harmless-sounding activities such as nature hikes can be ecologically destructive. In the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, ecotourists have worn down the marked trails and created alternate routes, contributing to soil erosion, and plant damage. In some cases, local people contribute to the environmental degradation. Since most forms of ecotourism are owned by foreign investors and corporations, few benefits are provided to local communities, and only a limited number of local people are employed in the economy. The lack of economic opportunities for local people obliges them to degrade the environment as a means of life earning. The presence of ecotourists, thus, encourages the development of destructive markets in wildlife souvenirs, such as the sale of coral trinkets on tropical islands and animal products in Asia. Generally, ecotourism has been developed with virtually no controls. While governments are typically entrusted with the administration and enforcement of environmental protection, they often lack the capability to manage ecotourism sites effectively. The regulations may be vaguely defined, hard to enforce, and uncertain in effectiveness. Management by private ecotourism companies offers an alternative, but it is believed that such companies have more desire for self-interests, which indicates this practice is not economically feasible. When will the trend of ecotourism towards commercialization end?
