A painter wants to paint a beautiful tree, but on the dry land where he is living he can’t find a tree with any leaves. Therefore, he has no choice but to add some imaginary leaves to the bear branches of the tree. That is what we can see in the picture. But what does the picture try to tell us?

I guess the picture is trying to draw our attention to the worldwide problem of water shortage.

In fact, in today’s world, water shortage is becoming an increasingly serious problem. As members of the global village, we should do our best to keep what is described in the picture from becoming true by saving water, planting trees and doing whatever we can to protect the environment. Only in this way will we have beautiful green leaves around us forever.

W: Well, I find it’s a communicative way to study people and you learn how to read people in drama. So usually I can understand what people are saying even though they might be lying. M: That would be useful.

W: Yeah, it’s very useful for me as well. I’m in English lecture, so use a lot of drama in my classes such as role plays. And I ask my students to create mini-dramas. They really respond well. At the moment, I’m hoping to get onto a Ph.D course. I’d like to concentrate on Asian drama and try to bring Asian theatre to the world’s attention. W: This food is terrible. I can't even finish my dinner.

M: I know. You think with all the money we pay for room and board, the university could hire a better food service. Where are you headed next? W: I'm going over to the student center to play some bridge. M: You are spending your time on a card game?

W: Not just any card game. It's one of the most strategic. M: So I've heard about it. Don't you play with a partner? W: Yeah. Four people play, two against the other two. M: So you try to play in cooperation with your partner.

W: Actually, the cards of one of the four players are turned face up. That player is called the dummy.

M: I wouldn't want to be called that. When you are the dummy what do you do while the cards are being played?

W: Anything you want. Sit there and study, get snacks for everyone. I like to stand behind my partner and watch.

M: You know, I've heard that bridge is habit forming. You should be careful not to play so much that you don't get your studying done.

W: Don't worry about me. I only play Thursdays after dinner, and sometimes when they need a fourth player. If you like, I could teach you.

M: Thanks. But I have a pretty heavy work this term. I already spend my evenings learning things I don't really know. SECTION B

Directions: In this section, you’ll hear a mini-talk. Listen carefully and then fill in the numbered blanks with the information you’ve got. Fill in each blank with NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS. You’ll hear the mini-talk TWICE.

The first step to stop drug abuse is knowing why people start to use drugs. The reasons people abuse drugs are as different as people are from one to another. But there seems to be one common thread: people seem to take drugs to change the way they feel. They want to feel better or feel happy or to feel nothing. Sometimes, they want to forget or to remember. People often feel better

about themselves when they are under the influence of drugs. But the effects don't last long. Drugs don't solve problems. They just postpone them. No matter how far drugs may take you, it's always around trip. After a while, people who miss drugs may feel worse about themselves, and then they may use more drugs. If someone you know is using or abusing drugs, you can help. The most important part you can play is to be there. You can let your friends know that you care. You can listen and try to solve the problem behind your friend's need to use drugs. Two people together can often solve a problem that seems too big for one person alone. Studies of heavy abusers in the United States show that they felt unloved and unwanted. They didn't have close friends to talk to. When you or your friends take the time to care for each other, you're all helping to stop drugs abuse. After all, what is a friend for?

Now, you have 2 minutes to write your answers on the

This is the end of Listening Comprehension.
