Dear Joe, You are only 2 years old and too young to read this but I thought I would write you a letter and let you know about what the world was like when I was young. I was born 75 years ago in a small town in the countryside. Life was very different then. We didn’t have mobile phones and when we wanted to talk to our friends, we would go over to their house and say “hello”. We didn’t have email either, so we had to write letters. Maybe when you are older, there will be something better and faster than email. You see no one can tell the future. When we traveled from town to town , we walked or rode horses or took a cart(马车). So you think you know your dog well. But how well does

your dog know you? She probably recognizes (辨认出) you when she sees you. But can a dog tell by only looking at you whether you are happy or angry? Researchers in Austria have taught pet dogs to tell the differences from your face.
Dogs are very mindful of sound. When dog owners shout or speak in a strong, angry voice, dogs often act guilty (歉疚的) and leaves quietly from the area. Recently, researchers also found that dogs can look at our faces, and tell the differences between a smile and a frown (皱眉).
The researchers tried to teach dogs to understand expressions(表情) on the face. They showed the dogs two pictures. On one picture, the person looked happy. The other appeared angry. Then researchers showed the dogs the pictures of the eyes or mouths of people. But the dogs had never seen these persons before. The dogs also saw the left half of the faces. The scientists do the research to find out if the dogs understand that smiling eyes have the same meaning as a smiling mouth, or angry eyes have the same meaning as an angry mouth. And it showed that the dogs really did perform very well in these tests.
The study has shown that dogs can discriminate these expressions on the people’s faces are different. They would connect something nice with the smiling face and something bad with the angry face. But what is not sure of at this point is if they really know the true meanings of them—for example, a frown means angry.
