Some people in support of the reform argue that students are supposed to learn traditional Chinese culture, which is beneficial to their development. What’s more, the wisdom of classic Chinese poetry and writings helps students cope with the challenges they are faced with in life, shaping their views of life.
For opponents of the reform, writings in classic Chinese are no longer used in daily life. Additionally, students in primary and junior high schools are too young to understand them. Therefore, they are afraid that students will totally lose interest in Chinese.
From my perspective, it is important to learn the classic Chinese poetry and writings, for they are an important part of Chinese culture. We should treasure our cultural heritage. Yet I don’t think it is necessary to include a lot of classic poetry and writings in textbooks. After all, the purpose of learning the classics is to appreciate them rather than prepare for exams.
