A powerful earthquake hit Japan at 2:46 pm on March 11. Japan's Meteorological Agency(气象厅) announced its first warnings just three minutes later. The country has one of the best earthquake early warning systems in the world.
Japan is one of those most well-prepared countries about tsunami(海啸) warning. They had a warning. But what went wrong was that they had .not thought the size of this event. There are two reasons for this. Japan had not had any event anywhere near as bill as this one in the last 150 years. And scientists had not expected such a large earthquake happening off the coast-of Japan. The 9.0 magnitude(震级) earthquake was the fourth most powerful earthquake ever recorded worldwide. It was also the worst earthquake ever to hit Japan. The tsunami waves reached as high as 13 meters in some areas. But Japan's concrete(混凝土) sea walls are about 10 meters:
A tsunami wave can travel,as fast as 800 kilometers per hour. To get to higher ground people would often have to travel for many kilometers. This takes a lot of time.

Sitting in the play area of the doctor's office,my children,Paul, four, and Bailey, three, built a Lego(积木) tower while we were waiting to be called for Paul's examination.
“Good job,you guys,” I said, trying not to sound too tired. My husband was aw-ay on business, and it was difficult being alone with the kids. At times I felt like I was living in the jungle rather than the suburb.
“Don't put the Lego in your mouth,Bailey,” I said. Paul grabbed(抓取) it from him. “That's not nice,Paul,” I said. He gave back the Lego. I looked around the
waiting room. A woman was eating something,a couple was talking, and an old gentleman in a blue jacket was reading a magazine. I wished I could sit quietly for a while. I wanted to be able to take a rest,or go shopping alone. At once,I was ashamed (惭愧的) of myself. What kind of mother was I? “God,” I thought,“help me to be the very best mom I can be.”
The nurse came into the waiting room to get us. Just at that moment, the old gentleman in the waiting room put down his magazine and came up to me. With a smile on his face,he said, “Your children are most certainly lucky to have such a wonderful mother.” “Thank you,” I replied in a low voice and watched him walk back to his seat. We followed the nurse into the examination room. While she weighed Paul,I told her how that man had made my day. Motherhood is still a jungle sometimes, but now when I feel tired I remember the encouraging words of the old gentleman.
