l.Every year millions of women are screened with X-rays to pick up signs of breast cancer.lf this happens early enough, the disease can often be treated successfully. According to a survey published last year,21 countries have screening programmes. Nine of them, including Australia, Canada, the US and Spain, screen women under50,

2. But the medical benefits of screening these younger women are controversial, partly because the radiation brings a small risk of inducing cancer. Also, younger women must be given higher doses of X-rays because their breast tissue is denser.

3. Researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia analysed the effect of screening more than160,000 women at11 local clinics. After estimating the women's cumulative dose of radiation, they used two models to calculate the number of extra cancers this would cause.

4.The mathematical model recommended by Britain's National Radiological Protection Board(NRPB) predicted that the screening programme would cause36 cancers per100,000 women,18 0f them fatal. The model preferred by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation led to a lower figure of20 cancers.

5.The researchers argue that the level of radiation-induced cancers is \com-pared to the far larger number of cancers that are discovered and treated. The Valencia programme, they say, detects between300 and450 cases of breast cancer in every100,000 women screened.

6. But they point out that the risk of women contracting cancer from radiation could be reduced by between40 and80 percent if screening began at50 instead of45,because they would be exposed to less radiation. The results of their study, they suggest, could help \the technique\

7.\is a trade-off between the diagnostic benefits of breast screening and its risks,\admits Michael Clark of the NRPB.But he warns that the study should be interpreted with caution. \risk of causing one later in life. That's why radiation exposure should be minimized in any screening pro-gramme.

Swimmers can drown in busy swimming pools when lifeguards fail to notice that they are ln trouble. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says that on average15 people drown in Britishpools each year, but many more suffer major injury after getting into difficulties. Now a French compa-ny has developed an artificial intelligence system called Poseidon that sounds the alarm when\

When a swimmer sinks towards the bottom of the pool, the new system sends an alarm signal to apoolside moriil.oring station and a lifeguard's pager.ln trials at a pool in Ancenis, near Nantes,it saved a life within just a few months, says Alistair McQuade,a spokesman for its maker, Poseidon Technolo-gies。

Poseidon keeps watch through a network of underwater and overheard video cameras. AI software analyses the images to work out swimmers' trajectories. To do this reliably,it has to tell the difference between a swimmer and the shadow of someone being cast onto the bottom or side of the pool. %underwater environment is a very dynamic one, with many shadows and reflections dancing around.\

The software does this by \wall ofthe pool.lt does the same with an image from another camera viewing the shape from a different angle. If the two projections are in the same position, the shape is identified as a shadow and is ignored. But ifthey are different, the shape is a swimmer and so the system follows its trajectory.

To pick out potential drowning victims, anyone in the water who starts to descend slowly is addedto the software's \pool bot-tom for s seconds or more are considered in danger of drowning. Poseidon double-checks that the imagereally is of a swimmer, not a shadow, by seeing whether it obscures the pool's floor texture whenviewed from overhead. If so, it alerts the lifeguard, showing the swimmer's location on a poolsidescreen.

The first full-scale Poseidon system will be officially opened next week at a pool in High Wycombe.Buckinghamshire. One man who is impressed with the idea is Travor Baylis, inventor of the clockwork radio.Baylis runs a company that installs swimming pools - and he was once an underwa-ter escapologist with a circus. \he says.Buthe adds that any local authority spending£30,OOO-plus on a Poseidon system ought to be investingsimilar amounts in teaching children to swim.
