Lesson 1. Canaima - Eco-tours with Angels and Devils 1. At this height, the jungle looked like (a gigantic green carpet, except for the red rivers snaking through it.)(巨大的绿色毯子,唯有几条蜿蜒曲行于之上的红色河流)。。。the plane (took a dramatic dive)(猛地下将)along the trajectory of the mighty Angel Falls-the longest waterfall in the world-(as it plummeted down into Devil?s Canyon.)

2. It was one of the most awe-inspiring sights I have ever beheld, but (almost equally incredulous) (几乎令人同样不可思议的) was the fact that we were the only ones there!

3. Canaima?s remoteness is one reason; (there is no road access so you must charter a flight from Puerto Ordaz, a one-hour journey from the Venezuelan capital of Caracas)

4. The tour operators at Angel eco-tours (take an interesting approach in that they emphasize the park and its people more than Angle Falls.)

5. My fondest memory is of spending an evening (watching three generations of Pemon, decked out in their traditional garb,) (看着三代Pemon印第安人穿戴着传统的盛装), perform a ceremonial dance…(Our inhibitions quickly disappeared and before we knew it) (我们的拘束感很快消失,不知不觉间), we were dancing alongside the Pemon.

6. (Given the other-worldliness of the park,) (考虑到森林公园的超尘脱俗), I was not surprised to hear that (a large number of the flora, including several carnivorous plant varieties.) (大量的植物,包括许多食肉植物变种), are endemic to the region.

7. (As much as I found the trip exhilarating) (虽然我发现这次旅行令人激动), I would not say it was for everyone. Eco-tourism means responsible, (low-impact travel, and generally involves some degree of “roughing-it” )

After climbing up to the top of the mountain and looking afar from the vantage point, I saw laid out before me a spectacular view, which was one of the most awe-inspiring view I have ever beheld; but equally exhilarating was the fact that some distance away a hawk was soaring high, and then, for an instant, it suddenly plummeted down into the canyon.

After climbing the top of the mountain and looking afar from a vantage point,I saw a spectacular view of mountians laid before me .This is the most awe-inspiring sights I have ever seen before.

Not far away from me ,a hawk was soaring high, and then it suddenly plummeted down into the canyon. This was really exhilarating.

My fondest memory is of spending a few days with a family in a mountain village, dinnering with them and enjoying various dishes endemic to the region. It is of mellow sweetness to have watched them, decked out in their traditional garb, moving around the house. Of course, a stay there for some more days involves some degree of ?roughing-it?.

My fondest memory was of spenting a few days with a family in a mountain village, dinnering with them and enjoying dishes endemic to the region. We felt warm watching them deckde out in their traditional garb,of course if you want to stay there ,for some more days,it means some degree of \-it\ Lesson 2 A Right to Die 1. (The long simmering euthanasia issue)(长期以来“山雨欲来”的安乐死问题) has lately boiled over into a sometimes fierce public debate(激烈的争论), with both sides(claiming the mantle of ultimate righteousness)(都声称是为了最终的正义)。

2. And so the euthanasists have begun to (press their case with greater force.)

3. Cancer patients and sufferers from multiple sclerosis are the (most frequent subjects of euthanasia)(最容易成为安乐死的对象人群.)

4. Last fall 19 distinguished British doctors wrote an open letter calling for the legalization of euthanasia for AIDS patients (in the advanced stages of their illness.)

5. Some zealous actions by pro-euthanasists have (supplied ammunition to those)(反而为那些人提供了反击他们的依据)who contend that legalizing active voluntary euthanasia (would be the thin edge of the wedge for a variety of abuses.)(会遭人滥用而酿成大祸)。

6. Even in the Netherlands, the proposals now before Parliament would restrict euthanasia to a small number of cases and would (surround even those with elaborate safe guards.)(甚至对那些已具惫严密安全防范措施的病例也要围绕它们反复论证). 7. Quite a few terminally ill patients would often like their doctors to administer lethal drugs to them to be relieved of suffering; there are also some of their families who would prefer that doctors withdraw any life-prolonging treatment since there is no hope of effecting an ultimate cure. This problem has lately boiled over into a fierce public debate in some European countries. Quite a few terminally ill patients would often ask doctors to administer lethal drugs to them to be relieved of suffering; there are also some other families who would rather prefer to withdraw the life-prolonging treatment, since there is no hope of effecting an ultimate cure. Recently this problem has boiled over into a fierce public debate in some European countries.

Those who are opposed to ?Euthanasia? believe that it is no different from murder and that it is unethical, while the pro-euthanasists contend that since the incurably ill consider their existence more of a torment and suffering, why not let them end their lives in a decent and humane way? We ought to respect the patients? final decision.

The fear that ?mercy killing? will be abused or used unnecessarily is not groundless. But with effective measures rigorously taken by the government and the departments concerned, and under tightly controlled conditions in hospitals, this problem would most probably be resolved in the end.

Lesson 3 Life is a gamble 1. a business transaction, (even a chance remark may) (甚至于无意间说的话可能都会) result immediately or ultimately (最后) in tragedy.(悲剧)

2. To many of us, gambling is, (in many cases)(在许多情况下)a non-toxic(无毒的) drug against boredom(乏味) and apathy(无趣), and (may well help preserve good temper, patience and optimism.)

3. As a matter of fact, few of us have the right to condemn gambling (as few of us can say that they never gamble.)(因为很少有人敢说他们从不赌博)。

4. If a man makes gambling an obsession(着魔)- (almost a form of insanity )(几近

于疯狂的程度)-he will not only lose his property (gained through years of toil.)(多年辛勤工作换来的)。

5. …if one sticks to his limits, it is more a game of fun (than the root of all evils.)(而不是万恶之源)。

6. …that gambling itself will lose its fascination (魔力) (as an opiate to a colorless and dreary existence.)

The plunge we take is no different from the gamble we are taking against chance, against destiny, and in the course of it we may realize ourselves as an added bonus. And as a consequence we would be either bled white or finally make a career after painstaking efforts, or in rare cases, be continuously blessed with an unhindered advance, and we would take great pride in our obtained success.

If a man makes gambling an obsession, he will not only lose his property gained through years of toil, he will also lose his dignity and conscience. Therefore it is advisable that they beat a hasty retreat from such an indulgence and be away from the sea of troubles.

On the bright side of the coin, we win in the struggle against destiny, and the odds are in our favor, then gambling is no longer a toxic drug, rather it is one against boredom and apathy, and may well preserve our good temper, patience and optimism, which will do us a world of good.

Lesson 4 Tolerance is the best medicine 1. No matter what we do, (we are always involved with other.)(我们总是与其他人打交道).

2. We might have some friction with a member of the family or a quarrel with someone in the neighborhood. (We might get cross with a co-worker in the factory or get in Dutch with the boss.)

3. Someone else may look down upon us or deliberately hurt us by flinging mud at us in the public. Someone may even (steal an attack on us or hit us below the belt or speak evil of us.)

7. But there are some other people who attribute success more to luck or opportunities than to perseverance(毅力). To their mind, some can succeed much more easily than others simply because of their good luck or opportunities given, though they may not as able and competent(有能力的). No doubt, luck and opportunities are some sort of agents(因素), which may speed up one?s success. But they are only agents, no more than that(仅此而已). Actually opportunities only bring some sort of promise(预示,希望), never working out (有结果)on their own; they have to be combined with hard and constant work (努力和持之以恒的工作)to make a success out of a man. After all, success usually comes to the prepared(有准备的人), or those who are willing to take advantage of(利用)the coming opportunities. And then, such people may be blessed with luck(受到运气的青睐).

There are some successful people in every walk of life. On the one hand, their successes depend on their born genius, later effort and support from their family; on the other hand, their successes are attributed to virtues as a being. These successful people seldom contradict others unless in a life-and-death struggle. If necessary, they know how to swim with the tide and tailor their words to the tastes of other fellows.. They will say things in season and do things in moderation 9.

后悔得要死的事。They are marvelous at adapting themselves to the surroundings and good at pleasing the ears of other people. They are quite easy-going and will never fling mud at people. If they happen to have friction with someone, they will try to have a heart-to-heart talk with him in a placid mood. They will never do what they will bite their tongue off later on. Lesson 5. Why do we laugh? 1. The search for an answer (brings you face to face with problems.)(在你亲身体验到问题);

2. (You may also set out with the belief)(你也许开始相信)that the emotion has evolved into something rather sophisticated(很成熟的东西)…

3. …most people cannot (will themselves to laugh on command) (逼迫自己笑) or suppress (压抑) an unwanted attack of the giggles(咯咯的笑).

4. Indeed, studies have shown that people are thirty times more likely to laugh in social settings than when they are alone, (in the absence of pseudo-social stimuli like television.)

5. To many researchers, (laughter is about strengthening social bonds.)

7. By inviting the audience to join him in laughter, Kennedy (bridged much of the social gap between his wealthy, noble status and ordinary voters.)(弥合了他富有、高贵的身份与普通选民之间的差别).

8. But laughter can exclude as well as include, (as another American president learnt to his cost.)(这是另外一位总统付出代价意识到的).

9. Gruner believes that (laughter originated from the cry of triumph)(笑起源于胜利的喊叫声)and mock that a fighter might utter when he defeats his foe.

10. (A convincing explanation of why people laugh)(能信服地解释为什么人们笑的原因) must wait for more and better data.

11. It?s good to laugh. It draws people together. You feel connected with someone that you share laughter with. And it?s important, sometimes, in a very serious tense moment, you might share laughter and everyone feels relieved(放心的). So it?s really a good thing to share with other people. And also laughter has a lot of health benefits(好处、利益). I know there is a famous author who wrote a book about how he cured his cancer by watching comedy movies and laughing. And they say that when you laugh, your diaphragm moves up and down and it makes the fluid, the lymph in your body move around, and then that keeps you very healthy. And it relieves stress and relaxes your muscle and you feel connected and relaxed with the other person especially when you don?t speak the language with the other people. If the other person laughs and smiles back, they feel connected, even though they can?t talk. It is good to laugh. You know we have two expressions in English that you might find interesting. One is “Laughter is contagious.” That means it catches just like viruses or bacteria And we also say, “Laughter is the best medicine.”
