Thirty-five years ago, it was an honor for an 18-year-old to go to Harvard University. But one young man soon found that his heart wasn’t in studying law.He would spend many nights in front of the school’s computer and the next day sleep in class.
Two years later, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. He went on to start the Microsoft company with childhood friend Paul Allen.
Now Microsoft is the world’s biggest software (软件) company. About 90 percent of computers run on Microsoft Windows. Gates topped the list of the richest men on the planet (星球) for 13 years until 2007. But last week the billionaire (亿万富翁) made the decision to give all his money to charity, instead of to his children.
All of his $58 billion fortune will go to The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (基金会). Gates and his wife set up the foundation to help with health and education projects around the world. After stepping down (辞职) from Microsoft in July, Gates will devote himself to running the charity programs.
“I’ve been given the gift of g reat wealth. But I believe with great wealth comes great responsibility (责任), the responsibility to give back to society,” said Gates.
The Gates couple’s foundation is the world’s biggest charity foundation. Their spending on fighting AIDS in Africa is more than most developed countries have spent.
“Bill Gates has set an example for people like you and me,” said Leonard Pitts, a US writer. “He has me thinking about things I can do, the responsibility I have, to change my corner of the world.”
