we had a five-minute warm-up. 62 In fact, I didn t do well in it. With the teacher s order, we
began to run as fast as we could. Towards the end, I was so tired that I slowed down and several
runners caught up with me. However, encouraged by my classmates, I kept running with every
effort. To my pleasure, this is the best result I have got in an 800-meter race.
Not only I challenged the strength (挑战体能) that a runner needed but also I
learned that trying my best would really make a difference.

You don t need millions to be happy. In fact, at the Happiness Training Centre in Australia, a
couple of hundred dollars may be enough.
The training centre opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages
have been paying A$200 an hour for lessons on how to feel great. “You can really increase your
happiness levels. That s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, beginner of the centre. Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income and financer (收入
及财务因素). As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and
relationships.
Most of us are better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels
haven t changed to match that.
Studies show that once the basic needs of housing and food are met, other wealth adds very
little to happiness.
Scientists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is that we compare
ourselves to people better off.
“The fact is that if you want to be happy, there s a very simple thing you can do: compare
yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, etc.” said Sharp.
The Happiness Training Centre hopes to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors
by paying attention to “more than just your bank account.”
