at forest of the north. There they will spend the winter.
When spring comes, the caribou must return north. This spring migration is the most pressing journey. Female caribou need to get back to the home range to have their calves. When the journey begins, lakes and streams are still frozen. Storms still rage. After a long winter, the caribou are like scarecrows from months of very limited food. Why do they begin to migrate in mid-March? No one knows for sure. The increasing daylight may have something to do with it.
The greatest danger on the journey north is from wolves. They attack caribou at the head and neck, not about the legs as many people believe. A pack of five or ten hungry wolves will often completely devour a caribou in two days.
In the summer the caribou are pestered by mosquitoes. They often run about seeking escape from the insects. It is the end of summer or the beginning of fall before they really can begin to fatten up. During this period they also grow a fine coat and a new set of antlers. They are then ready to breed and to start on south to their winter home in the forest.
