Writer: Author Conan Dyle (1859-1930),He is a famous novelist of detective stories. He used to be a doctor. In 1887,his first detective novel A Study In Scarlet came about. And the next The Sign of Four in 1890 brought him the glory. Next year ,he abandoned medicine for literature. In the next 40 years ,he had written about 60 novels about the lead character Sherlock Holmes, which made Holmes known to the whole world.
Now let me introduce the first part of story. In the year 1878, John H. Watson took his degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London. Having completed his studies there .Watson was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. However he got injured there and was brought to the hospital in London. As he did not have much money ,he planed to rent a house with someone else. In that case ,he met Holmes by accident .At the first sight, Holmes told him he had been in Afghanistan which shocked Watson. Then he was told that Holmes was a detective.
Holmes was asked to investigate a business during the night at 3, Lauriston Gardens, off the Brixton Road. by Gregson , a police of London. In this business, the police saw a light there about two in the morning, and as the house was an empty one, suspected that something was amiss. He found the door open, and in the front room, which is bare of furniture, discovered the body of a gentleman, well dressed, and having cards in his pocket bearing the name of ‘Enoch J. Drebber, Cleveland, Ohio, U. S. A.’
There had been no robbery, nor is there any evidence as to how the man met his death. There are marks of blood in the room, but there is no wound upon his person. The police was at a loss as to how he came into the empty house; indeed, the whole affair is a puzzler.
As they raised the dead man, a ring tinkled down and rolled across the floor. It was a wedding ring. Moreover. In the corner of the room a large piece hand peeled off ,leaving a yellow square of coarse plastering. Across this bare space there was in blood-red letters a scrawled single word RACHE a man’s forefingers dipped in blood. His glass allowed him to observe that the plaster was slightly scratched in doing it, which would not have been the case if the man’s nail had been
From John Rance ,the constable where the case occurred , Holmes knew someone who named Hope sprang to his feet with a frightened face and suspicion in his eyes. Latter ,Rance resumed his seat without ,however, losing his mystified expression and Rance naturally considered Hope as a drunk chap. However ,Holmes got to know that Hope was pretending to be drunk and that this man maybe the criminal who was going to take the ring back. To find the criminal ,they put on an advertisement in order to find the criminal.
Then, Hope ,the criminal had made an old lady to fetch the ring back from Holmes. Holmes had followed the old lady to get the clue of the criminal, but the old lady escaped in a cab. On the other hand
, Strangerson ,the secretary of Hope, had not showed up ,had found died in a hotel. Holmes thought the death must have a connection with the murder.
Later, a cabman was asked to help Holmes with his boxes. When Holmes asked the cabman to help him with his buckle, Holmes catched the cabman and declared this man was the murder, Hope.
