Class President
Quinn was running for the class president. His best friend Zack helped him. They hung posters(海报) up in the hallways. They wrote, ―Quinn Should Win!‖
A student walked by as they hung one poster on the door to the library. He read the poster and asked, ―Why should you win?‖ and then walked away.
Quinn had never thought about why before. He knew he was popular and lots of students would vote(投票) for him.
―I think you should have some promises,‖ Zack said. Quinn thought for a while and said, ―How about putting a new gumball machine(糖果机) in the boys’ room?‖
At Quinn’s home, Quinn and Zack made up posters that said, ―Vote Quinn: New gumball machine in the boys’ room. Everyone will play football at noon!‖
The next day at school, some of Quinn’s friends avoided him, especially the girls. He asked Dave if he wanted to play football at noon. Dave answered, ―Yes. Your Majesty(陛下).‖
―What’s the matter with everyone?‖ Quinn said to himself.
―I’ll tell you what’s wrong,‖ said a girl behind him. ―The girls don’t care whether you’re going to put a gumball machine in the boys’ room. And nobody wants to be told they have to play football at noon. Nobody likes your promises because you only made promises about what you like.‖
Quinn thought about what he could do. Then he made a survey to know what his

Teenage life is interesting, adventurous(冒险的) and difficult. Teenagers have to go through many problems. It may probably be a family problem or a school problem. It is important to learn how to deal with those problems.

Do you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you think out of the box? If so, you could be the next great inventor. ―But I’m just a kid,‖ you might say! Don’t worry about a little thing like age. Some of the greatest inventors in the world get their start as kids.
For example, Benjamin Franklin created paddles(桨) for his hands to help
him swim faster when he was only 12 years old. His creation led to today’s flippers(橡胶蹼)! You don’t have to be an adult, a scientist or a genius(天才) to be an inventor. One thing you need is: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways. Sometimes their understanding of things leads to great inventions! Sometimes inventors come up with completely new things that solve a problem. At other times new inventions are only things that are changed or improved. Then they work better or serve a different purpose.
So what should you do if you have a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Ask them to help you create a working model of your idea.
Once you have a working model, you should test it. Sometimes after the test, you may find your idea is not as great as you thought. At other times you realize it is a good idea and your working model can help you work out how to make it better. If you need some ideas, consider these kids and their inventions:
Frank Epperson invented Popsicles(冰棍) when he was 11. One night he mixed soda powder(苏打粉) and water with a stick. He left it outside all night. The next morning, he found that the stick had frozen(冻结) inside the drink during the cold night.
Chester Greenwood created earmuffs(耳罩) when he was 15. He found his ears got

Holidays
A holiday is a special time. It is a special day to remember special people or special events in history. The word holiday is made up of two words: holy(神圣的) and day. At one time, most holidays celebrated religion(宗教). Today, holidays celebrate more than religion. Some holidays are even for nature or animals! Earth Day, for example, is a holiday when we think about how to take care of our planet, Earth.
Every month, except August, has an important holiday. On some holidays children do not have to go to school and adults do not have to go to work. Christmas and Thanksgiving are examples of holidays when most people do not have to go to work or school. Of course, there are people who have to work, even on a holiday. Police officers, bus drivers, fire fighters, and hospital workers have to work on holidays. They are always needed, even on important holidays. These people are hard at work while everyone else gets to stay home and celebrate. On other holidays, people go to work and school. There is no day off on holidays like Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. People may still celebrate at work or school, or when they get home.
People celebrate holidays by spending time together. These days, everyone is so busy that it is hard to find time for family activities. Holidays are great time for each member of the family to get together and get relaxed. Sometimes people wear special clothes and eat special food. For example, on St. Patrick’s Day, people use green to celebrate the day. People may eat green food which are shaped like a shamrock(三叶草).
People also celebrate some holidays with parades(游行). There are large parades in many cities and towns. One of the largest holiday parades in America is the Macy’s Parade in New York City. It is held every year on Thanksgiving Day. It is to celebrate both Thanksgiving and Christmas. It attracts more than 3.5 million people to the streets of
