A

The US has the bald eagle. Ukraine is represented by the swan. And France has its Gallic rooster . But Canada doesn’t have a national bird of its own yet. So on the country’s 150th birthday, it thought it

would be a good idea to solve this problem.

Canadian Geographic magazine started a vote online in 2015 for its National Bird Project. A year later, the gray jay stood out in a group of 40 candidates , beating more well-known Canadian birds such as the snowy owl and Canada goose.

With a body of about 30 cm long and a weight of only 70 g, the gray jay may not be as cool as the US’ bald eagle, but it’s already considered by many Canadians to best represent the country than any other of its birds, even though it still has a long way to go to be officially recognized as the national bird by the government.

According to Dan Strickland, a gray jay expert, the bird is very hardy – being able to live in temperatures as cold as -30 C – just like the Canadian people. It’s also smart and friendly – it’ll land on people’s fingers and eat from their hands.

―I’d like to think that this characterizes a typical Canadian,‖ Strickland told Popular Science. This admiration of modesty and kindness can be seen in other Canadian national animal symbols – the beaver , to name one.

Beavers became important in Canadian history because of the fur trade, which helped build the country in the first place. The image of beavers then started to appear on stamps, coins and different coats of arms (盾徽), and they were made an official symbol of Canada in 1975 – even earlier than when the maple tree was officially recognized as a Canadian symbol in 1996.

―England has the lion, Russia has the bear … whereas our humble beaver is much more [modest] – they build real houses, they store up food for the winter,‖ David Morrison, director at the Musee de Civilisation Canadiens in Quebec, told The Huffington Post.

―We’re not grand (雄伟的). We’re the hard-working, good guys.‖

56. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the gray jay according to the article?

A. It is the official Canadian national bird.

“英语知识能力竞赛”试题 第4页 (共12页)

B. It does not like to stay close to people. C. It is the most well-known Canadian bird. D. It shares some of the good qualities of Canadians. 57. According to the article, ______.

Canadians think highly of people who are humble and hard-working D. Canada has more national symbols than any other country in the world 58. What is the article mainly about?

A. Different national birds around the world. B. Animals that represent Canada. C. Why the gray jay is appreciated in Canada.

D. Features a national animal should have.

There’s a morning each spring when people in North America and Europe get out of bed and wonder, ―How can it be this late already?‖

That’s the magic of daylight saving time. It’s kind of a ―society-imposed (强加的) jet lag (时差),‖ Ilene Rosen, a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, told CNN.

Under this system, time skips forward (快进) an hour each March at the expense of everyone’s sleep. And in fall, clocks are turned back an hour.

As one might imagine, all this changing of clocks leaves some people pretty angry. Even in the media, daylight saving time has been called ―useless‖ and ―hot garbage‖.

So how did this much-hated tradition get started?

School children are often taught that daylight saving time was created to benefit farmers. This, however, is not quite correct.

At the beginning, daylight saving time was started to save energy. During his time as a US ambassador in the late 18th century, Benjamin Franklin suggested changing the hours so there would be more sunlight in the evening. With more light at night, more candles could be saved and less money spent.

Daylight saving time would finally happen, but centuries later. In World War I, governments were

“英语知识能力竞赛”试题 第5页(共12页) concerned about saving fuel, so they changed the clocks to make greater use of natural light during work hours. In the US, daylight saving time would then be canceled and reintroduced several times over the next century.

Today, two states refuse to use daylight saving time: Hawaii and Arizona.

People still hotly debate whether daylight saving time actually saves any energy at all. Yale University economics professor Matthew Kotchen is one of the many who argue that the energy saved on lighting is actually smaller than the amount spent on air conditioning during those longer, sunny days. But it looks like, for the near future at least, daylight saving time is here to stay.

59. Which of the following statements is TRUE about daylight saving time according to the article? A. It is used everywhere in North America and Europe. B. People change clocks in summer and winter.

C. People sleep one hour less when clocks are changed in spring. D. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine decides how it works. 60. We can conclude from the article that ______.

A. not everyone agrees that daylight saving time is a good thing B. people will not use daylight saving time in the near future C. daylight saving time has been used in the US since the 19th century D. daylight saving time brings no benefits to anyone 61. Daylight saving time was created to ______. A. help farmers to increase crop yields B. make better use of sunlight and save energy C. mislead enemies during World War I

D. suit people’s sleeping habits during different seasons 62. According to Matthew Kotchen, ______. A. daylight saving time could save a lot of fuel B. people should try to use less air conditioning C. daylight saving time increases energy use

D. the effects of daylight saving time should be studied

How do you get your information when you go online? Are you ever worried that you might only be seeing a limited view? Part of the reason for this is the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (人工智能, AI) and algorithms (算法) that make sure we only see things that interest us.

The phrase ―echo chamber‖ has become widely used since events like the election of Donald Trump as the US president. It means that users of social media websites such as Facebook only read their own opinions or ones they agree with.

Algorithms, like the kind used by Facebook, often point us toward articles that show our own ideas, and search results usually give us what we already know and like.

As a result, social network users are likely to fall into the ―Relevance Paradox (相关性悖论)‖, which happens when people only read information that is relevant to them, according to The Huffington Post. And in many cases, people don’t even realize this is happening. They stop looking for fresh, new information from different points of view because of a lack of experience and knowledge of other opinions.

This means some of us unknowingly live in an echo chamber. This then continues because people in the same social group agree with us too. In other words, the echo chambers stay because they tell us that we are right, even if we are not.

As websites get to know us better, they get better at showing us things that interest us, while also removing things we don’t really like, Eli Pariser, CEO of news website Upworthy told the US radio station NPR.

―What most algorithms are trying to do is to increase the amount of attention you’re spending,‖ he said. And while it helps us deal with the large amount of information on the internet, that algorithm also has some downsides. ―The danger is that you end up not seeing what people who think differently see and, in fact, not even knowing that it exists.‖

So here comes the burning question – is there a way out?

―The way to break free from this is to start understanding how algorithms work, and to manually (人工地) seek out (寻找) others with different viewpoints,‖ Theo Priestley, CEO of Cronycle, a web platform (平台) told The Huffington Post.

“英语知识能力竞赛”试题 第7页(共12页) 63. According to the article, people in an echo chamber ______. A. are more willing to accept different ideas B. prefer to look for fresh, new information

C. only recognize information they are willing to accept D. only trust information from well-known sources

64. According to the article, algorithms used by most social media ______. A. fail to draw most people’s attention B. are slow in dealing with information

C. are good at showing people a variety of viewpoints D. may make people narrow-minded without them noticing

65. Which of the following statements would Theo Priestley probably agree with? A. Social media should use less AI and algorithms.

B. People should actively look for different ideas themselves. C. It is impossible for people to escape from echo chambers. D. Algorithms that attract readers’ attention should not be used. 66. What is the article mainly about?

A. The idea of echo chamber and how to avoid it. B. How algorithms deal with information. C. The latest development in artificial intelligence. D. The best way to search information online.

Family fights are never pleasant. Whether you are dealing with a loud sister or a stubborn mom or dad, the situation can be bad. At least that’s what we have learned to expect.

What if it could be different? What if family fights and conflicts (冲突) could be turned into opportunities to become closer? What if problems could be solved with everyone walking away feeling more deeply cared for and loved?

Family fighting is, on one level, about power. Someone is telling someone else what to do. In a short moment, emotions can be brought out and the fight is on. You can go down that old road or you can try something different.

“英语知识能力竞赛”试题 第8页 (共12页)

In any fight, you have a need to be listened to and understood. People raise their voices and shout at each other because they’re not being listened to. It’s totally unconscious You want your mom or dad to listen and understand. You want your brother or sister to listen and care. But you always seem to forget that the person you’re fighting with has the same need to be listened to. So if you can put aside your need for a few minutes, the situation will change quickly. Give the other person some time to express his or her feelings, and you will earn your turn to be listened to.

And while you are listening, you have to listen for the right information. The best way to do this in emotional situations is to ignore most of the words because many people can’t express what they are feeling with words alone, especially when they are upset.

But if the situation starts to get out of hand, it would be wise to just calm down and leave the problem until later because many fights happen at the wrong time. The situation will die down quickly, usually in less than 30 seconds. You can either move on to problem solving or reach an agreement to work on it at a better time.

This way, everyone will feel respected and listened to, even when there is conflict. Emotions will be understood and respected, and it will bring your family closer together. 67. From the first 3 paragraphs, we can conclude that ______. A. people had better avoid family fights B. family members fight to control each other C. family fights can be turned into something positive

D. when relatives fight, it’s worse as they know each other’s weaknesses 68. In the author’s opinion, the key to handling family fights is to __________. A. satisfy the need to be listened to first B. make sure that you’re the first to be listened to C. ignore what others say in these emotional situations D. stop quarrelling when you feel you are giving orders 69. When the situation gets out of control, it’s best to ______. A. wait for a suitable moment to speak B. let the other person express their feelings C. work on a written agreement first

D. move on to problem solving

70. The main purpose of this article is to ______. A. tell readers that family fights are not that bad

B. teach readers how to listen in family fights

C. remind readers to show respect in family fights D. give advice on dealing with family conflicts

A good graduation speech should be remembered, but only for the right reasons. It should be targeted at all the audience and understandable for all of them — not just other students, but also your family members, friends and the faculty

Your speech should appear to have been written specially for the occasion. It shouldn’t be too general. Don’t talk only about yourself. Try and include your class within your speech. At the same time, avoid using expressions that only your class would understand.

Stories are a good way of holding the attention of your audience. Put a funny, emotional or just descriptive story somewhere in your speech. Make your graduating class come alive for those in the audiences who were not part of your class.

Include some major events that occurred in the past four years that were related to your class. Make it a point to keep the tone of the speech positive and avoid pulling down anyone. Be careful that you don’t hurt anyone’s feelings through your speech.

Do not give too much advice in your speech. If you are a guest speaker, you may provide a few pearls of wisdom. If you are part of the graduating class, it is better for you to keep your speech advice-free.

Check that you are pronouncing all names correctly.

A graduation speech should last for no longer than twenty minutes. Take the weather into consideration. If it is a really hot or a really cold day, no one will appreciate even a well-written speech at the risk of putting up with the heat or the cold. So keep your speech short.

Finish the speech by thanking parents and the faculty. Also show your appreciation for the headteacher.

71. What expressions should you choose for your graduation speech? (within 7 words)

_______________________________________________________________________________ 72. Why are you advised to tell a story somewhere in your speech? (within 6 words)

Companionship of Books

A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.

Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
