It was 15 years ago when I first came to Maine. Every March I was worried that spring might not come this year. The hills, sky and forest were gray, like an old painting. “Just wait,” a neighbor said. “You’ll w 86 up one morning and spring will just be there.”

Then there was an old apple tree. It sat on an undeveloped field in my neighborhood. It belonged to no one and therefore to e 87 . The tree’s dark branches sprawled (伸展)in the sky freely. No one ever pruned (修剪)it, but each spring it blossomed and the air became nice with the good s 88 of apples.

Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, I thought it should be pruned. I set out with a tool to remove a few branches. My neighbors heard me and they opened their doors to watch me. These were people I h 89 knew and spoke to, but it was as if I had come into their personal gardens.

My mobile-home neighbor was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” Another neighbor warned me, “Don’t kill it, now!” Soon half the neighborhood had j 90 me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches --- for knowing each other and sharing wonder.

One thaw(融化n.)l 91 to another. Just the other day I saw one of my neighbors at the local store. We had a chat. He said this recent winter had been especially long and he felt s 92 not having seen or spoken to anyone in our neighborhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a famous singer or movie star? Many talented, or good, singers dream about having a hit song, but few people actually reach that goal. Kelly Clarkson was an unknown singer and actress with such a dream. Clarkson was born in Texas in 1982. She had a difficult childhood because she moved from place to place with her mother.

Singing was not Clarkson’s only dream. When she was 11 years old, she wanted to become a marine biologist. But a teacher heard her singing and asked her to be a member of the school choir(合唱队)in the same year. She loved to sing but had never had formal training. In high school, she continued to sing and perform.

After graduating from high school, Clarkson made a short CD of her singing, but no recording companies were interested in her. She decided to move to Hollywood, California, because she wanted to become a professional singer or actress. After two years with little success, she moved back to Texas.

In 2002, her friends encouraged her to enter the new TV competition, American Idol. She

7

entered the contest, along with 10,000 other hopeful singers. She was one of the 30 finalists. Her beautiful voice and talented performances helped her win the competition. Tim went to school in London. His parents were both engineers and worked with computers, so it isn’t surprising that he loved computers from an early age. When he was eighteen, he left school and went to Oxford University, where he studied Physics. At Oxford, he became more and more interested in computers, and he made his first computer from an old television. He graduated in1976 and got a job with a computer company in Dorset, England. In 1989, he went to work in Switzerland, where he first had the idea of an international information network linked by computer… and he decided to call it the World Wide Web. In 1994, he went to live in the United States, where he now works. In 1995, he wrote an article in The New York Times where he said
