Passage 2
Patrick Carroll was a native of Ballihoy,in Ireland, and at the age of twenty-two,he joined the 7th Regiment of Fusiliers. He remained in this army for a period of seven years. After that he joined the navy. His unit was stationed at Woolwich;and the public house he frequently visited was kept by Mrs. Browning,a widow. He formed an idea that his attentions were not disagreeable to Mrs. Browning, and repeatedly asked her to marry him. It does not appear that she totally ignored his advances;but Carroll often got drunk and behaved in such a manner towards her as to cause her displeasure. She refused any longer to listen to his courtship.
On Sunday, the 26th of April,1835,he went to the public house and found that Mrs. Browning had some friends to tea,but he was not invited. Some angry words were exchanged between them, and he was forced to leave the house. The next morning he returned, and demanded that he be permitted to say a few words to Mrs. Browning in private(私下). This was refused. Nevertheless,he entered the bar where she was and, after having repeatedly struck her with his hand,he drew his sword and stabbed her.

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. If a late telephone call is regarded in the United States as a cause for concern, imagine the excitement and fear caused by a crowd of people arriving at the door at 2:00pm. On an island in the south Pacific, a plant manager from the United States had just such an experience. The natives of the island met one night to discuss a problem. When they arrived at a solution, they went to see the plant manager and woke him up to tell him what had been decided. Unfortunately, they did not know that it is a very serious matter to wake up Americans at such an hour. The plant manager, who did not understand the local culture, thought there was a fight and called the police. It never occurred to him(or to the natives)that parts of the day have different meanings in different cultures. 41.According to the U.S. custom, what does a very early telephone call mean to an American? _______
