第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

It was a hot morning when I started my flight training. Nearly two hundred of us stood at attention. We were very excited that on this day, we would finally begin the “hands-on” part of flight training. We had been through thirteen tough weeks of basic training.

That morning, we were delighted to wait for the moment to climb into the training plane to actually begin learning to fly. Each of us was convinced that we would soon fly “above the best”.

As we stood facing the officers, waiting for instructions, a tiny bird jumped out in front of us. It seemed confused and a little frightened. Suddenly, its mother flew over, as if encouraging it to fly. Everyone’s eyes followed the birds. Even our officers turned to watch, mesmerized by the scene. Over and over, the tiny bird ran as fast as its little legs could move, but it still failed to fly into the sky no matter how hard it had tried.

Completely ignoring the crowd of staring bystanders, the mother bird went on flying to and encouraging her little bird. All two hundred of us watched breathlessly. Each time it made its way across the grass in front of us, we sighed at its failure.

Finally, after we had stood at attention for what seemed like hours just watching, those tiny wings could fly at last. You could almost see the little bird feel very pride. Then, we burst into wild cheers. We watched, as the little bird followed its mother to fly into the sky. Our officers turned back to us, smiling. We learned a lot from the little bird.

36. Why was the author excited before his flight training?

Diversity training is a popular and frequently requested training option for many companies. Improving the relationship between employees and customers is important to the success of a business. As companies try to compete in a rapidly changing marketplace, diversity training gives these companies and their employees the competitive advantages.

Diversity training allows business people to utilize (利用) the differences that are part of personalities, communication styles and characteristics of people and respect these differences. Recently, there’s been a huge increase in the immigrant (移民) populations. That’s why the trend towards diversity training is including an approach to multiculturalism.

Multiculturalism is an aspect of diversity training that deals with specific cultural concerns. This means understanding and accepting the differences and appreciating the cultural differences of others. When people of different cultures communicate with each other, it’s common for certain behavior to be misunderstood. As an example, an employee from another culture may continually ask a manager for direction, “What should I do next?” The manager might interpret this behavior as lacking in the ability to make decisions and take action without waiting for someone to tell him what to do, while the employee may be reflecting a cultural action of respecting and obeying the manager.

Cultural groups are based on several characteristics including race, age, religion, language, nationality and more. Diversity training for managers uncovers some of the cultural differences that can affect job performance and may be important to understanding how to communicate with a multicultural customer base.

Sensitivity training for managers allows companies to deal with the fact that multiculturalism is an increasing factor in business. Merely adopting an attitude of “ignoring differences” won’t produce an effective or productive work environment.

40. We can learn from the text that diversity training . A. allows people to develop an ability to respect others’ efforts B. makes customers know the different cultures of a company C. helps to develop workers’ communication styles in public areas D. improves understanding between people from different cultures 41. What does the example in the text show?

A. Misunderstanding is a common phenomenon between new employees. B. People think differently about the same things in various cultures. C. Employees should not always ask for direction from employers. D. There are less special cultural concerns for diversity training.

42. Companies consisting of different cultural groups are advised to . A. face and deal with the cultural differences actively B. allow the people from the same culture work together C. set some skill training policies for groups

It is common to have difficulty sleeping during the day. Humans usually sleep best at night and are awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to get used to the unnatural schedule of shift (轮班) work — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

In order to make this adjustment, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.

Arrange to sleep in a quiet, dark room. This means you may have to turn off your phone, hang dark curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and train your family and friends to leave you alone while you sleep.

Fit in a nap (小睡). When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap

of less than 30 minutes just before work or during a break has been shown to improve performance.

Develop and follow a sleep routine. It’s best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to vary this too much on weekends. Your body likes routine.

Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may have a desire to reach for unhealthy foods to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But these choices are more harmful than helpful.

If you have tried all these methods and are still having problems getting enough quality sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medications (药物治疗) may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be a potential sleep disorder. 44. The purpose of the text is to . A. persuade workers to have a good sleep B. advise night workers to keep healthy C. encourage workers to do day work D. help night workers to sleep well 45. What does the author recommend?

A. A suitable amount of alcohol to help sleep. B. A regular life on weekdays and weekends. C. A dark room without phones to sleep in. D. A break for sleeping anytime during the day.

46. On which condition should a person turn to a sleep specialist for help? A. If he suffers from a sleep disorder for the first time. B. If a good sleep environment is greatly needed for him. C. If he fails to get quality sleep through his own efforts. D. If he has the problem of failing to sleep in the daytime. 47. We can learn from the text that . A. night workers need a long time to fall asleep

B. constant breaks at work help to improve performance C. it is difficult to create a good sleep environment

D. night work requires people to adjust their body clocks

Not having at least some kind of music or art education gives kids a severe disadvantage when they enter college and the workplace.

Music and art classes teach kids about creativity. When children are being creative they are using a different part of their brain that they don’t use in regular classes, like math. It is important to develop this creative part of the brain, so kids have a better chance of being successful in their chosen career (职业) path. For example, a child who wants to go into advertising as a career choice will need to have it to come up with new and innovative (创新的) ads for a company. If kids only have an education in math, English, and social studies, then they will not be

prepared for life after school.

There have been many studies that have proven that art and music education help kids do better in their regular classes. It is a fact that a good music education leads to better math grades. Art education helps teach children to be creative, which then helps them learn to come up with creative solutions to problems given to them in other classes. Art and music classes are important in helping teach children skills that can be applied to other classes.

Tools used in art classes and instruments used in music classes teach kids how to be responsible for expensive equipment that they will most likely be working with for future employers. For example, letting a child take charge of a musical instrument helps teach responsibility to the child and it helps teach him to be respectful of equipment that is not his. This is important because employers will expect their future employees to be able to be responsible.

48. From the text, we can learn that . A. kids use more of the creative part of the brain than the other part B. regular classes are generally less popular than music and art classes C. teachers like to tell students the importance of learning music and art D. music and art classes can help kids to make better use of their brain 49. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragaraph 2 refer to? A. Creativity. B. Education. C. Chance. D. Practice. 50. The last paragraph is mainly about .

A. instruments that most teachers and students use in music classes

B. the effect that music and art classes have on students’ sense of responsibility C. people who should take good charge of musical instruments

D. things students should do to make preparations for their future career

Q&A

Question: You’re one of the best taxi drivers I have ever met. I know it’s not easy to be a taxi driver, but I found that you’re very patient and always smile. 51 Answer: I believe being honest is one of the greatest gifts. It’s also what makes a man a good citizen.

I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be tough to fight the New York traffic. 52 In fact, most of them are honest fellows. You can read in newspapers almost every week that a taxi driver turns in money or jewels people have left in their taxis. If they weren’t honest, you wouldn’t be reading those stories in newspapers.

One time in Brooklyn, I found a diamond ring in my taxi. I remembered helping a lady with luggage that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two days to look for her so as to return the ring to her. I didn’t get much “thank you”. 53 I think I felt better than she did.

54 Even if some customers are rude, I still try to be nice to them, and then they behave themselves.

People ask me about tips. As far as I know, practically everyone will give you something. I always try to be nice to everyone whether they tip or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish (教区). I try to treat others like I think God wants me to. I have been trying this for a long time. 55 A. The longer I try, the easier it gets. B. Can you tell me your attitude towards the job? C. One has to be brave enough to face anyone, including himself, and tell the truth. D. Still, I felt good because I did what was right. E. So people get the wrong impression that they are bad. F. Some people gain their success not through their hard work but through dishonesty. G. I have never had any trouble with my customers. 四、写作 (共两节,满分35分) 第 5 页 共 7 页
