However, bats are not affected by free radicals produced during flight. The reason is that bats carry special genes to repair any damaged DNA.

Scientists think that because bats fly and produce free radicals, they’ve evolved to carry genes that shaped their special immune system.

“We’re thinking that the evolution of flight led to a sort of effect, influencing not only the immune system but also things like aging and cancer,” says Chris Cowled, of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. “We think we’ve really found something special.”

A microscope is a useful instrument for observing small objects. By producing a bigger image, the microscope reveals details that are undetectable to the naked eye(裸眼).

Before using the microscope, please read the instructions below.

CAUTION: Microscopes are both delicate and expensive and must be handled with care. 1. Always carry the microscope with two hands — one supporting the base and the other on the arm.

2. Avoid stretching the wire of the lamp across a walkway.

3. Keep the stage clean and always use a glass slide for specimens(样本).

4. To avoid crushing the glass slide when focusing, begin with the lens close to the specimen and gradually back off to focus.

5. Keep the microscope covered to prevent the dust while it is being stored. HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE: 1. Plug(接通电源) in the lamp.

2. Place a sample of what you wish to observe on a slide.

3. Adjust the mirror so it reflects light from the room up into the objective lens. When the mirror is correctly adjusted, a complete circle of light will appear when you look through the eyepiece. 4. Place your slide with the specimen directly over the center of the glass circle on the stage. If it is a wet slide, be sure the bottom of the slide is dry.

5. With the LOW POWER objective lens placed over the slide, use the coarse focus knob to lower the lens to the lowest point.

6. Look through the eyepiece with one eye while closing the other eye. Slowly raise the lens until the focus is relatively clear.

7. Use the fine focus knob to fine -tune(微调)the focus.

8. Without changing the focus knobs, switch to the HIGH POWER objective lens. Once you have switched to HIGH POWER, use only the fine focus knob to make the image sharper. 50. WL: It is hip hop, which is the way I like to think of it. It combines Chinese elements(元素) and sounds. I started it off in my last album(专辑) called Shangrila. And this album combines the music of minorities, in China, in Tibet, and in Mongolia. It’s beautiful and original to Chinese culture. And this new album called Heroes of Earth combines Peking Opera and Quen-chu(京剧和昆曲), which are thousand-year-old traditions also unique to Chinese culture. Very unique instruments, costumes, singing styles. I don’t think anyone has ever done this before in the hip hop world.

54.___________________

WL: Um, just the large quantity of work that I have to come up with. I produce for other artists and compose for them as well. And there are a lot of changes in music going on right now in Asia. And it’s really exciting so I decided that I’m going to need a studio in New York. I’m going to need a studio in Taipei. And maybe the rest I can get by with just my laptop. 55. ___________________

WL: Well, I started doing musical theatre. And I loved it so much from the age of 13, you know. Actually in 2000, I did my first movie and ever since then I’ve been enjoying doing movies. I don’t think I’m much of an actor. But I just love being surrounded by creative people and a lot of times doing music is a lonely struggle, especially composing, and arranging, producing my own albums. Acting, every day you get called and you’re surrounded by other actors and creative people.

56.___________________

WL: The first time I won, like you just said, when I was 22, it meant a lot to me. It was like…I didn’t know I could make this happen. I didn’t know I could get this kind of recognition. So back then, it was huge increase of confidence. And I don’t want to say vanity(虚荣心), but confidence. I think every artist needs confidence.
