IN 1883, an engineer named John Roebling got an idea to build a bridge between New York and Long Island. However bridge-building experts around the world thought that it was impossible. It had never been done before.

After much discussion he convinced (说服) his son Washington, a great engineer, that the bridge could be built.

The project started well, but a few months in, an accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and he was not able to walk or talk.

In spite of his handicap (障碍), Washington never lost heart. He still wanted to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp (敏锐的) as ever.

But all he could do was move one finger. So he decided to make the best use of it. By moving his finger, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife’s arm with his finger, “telling” her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method to tell the engineers what to do. The project carried on again.

For 13 years Washington tapped (敲) out his instructions (指令) with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed.

Today the Brooklyn Bridge stands as a monument (纪念碑) to one man’s unbeatable (打不垮的) spirit.

It is also a monument to the engineers and their teamwork, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world.

Once a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable(悲惨的)and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seems just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father , a chef(厨师), took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the water in the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in the first pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter sighed and impatiently waited, wondering what his father was doing.

After 20 minutes he turned off the burners(火炉). He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in another bowl. He then ladled(舀取) the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to his daughter, he asked, “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs and coffee.” She replied.

4

“ Look closer,” he said, “ and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard -boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma(香气) brought a smile to her face. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and the coffee beans had each faced the same adversity(逆境) — the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potatoes used to be strong and hard, but in boiling water, they became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile(脆弱的), with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior(内部) until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “ When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

In life, things happen around us, and things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is what happens within us.

37. Why did the father take his daughter to the kitchen? A. To teach his daughter how to be a good cook. B. To explain to his daughter life is like cooking. C. To educate his daughter how one responds to difficulties. D. To show that he was very skillful and good at cooking. 38. What can we infer from the article?

D. The father explained a big issue in a simple way.
