We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.
So, you have to give a speech—and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you
2
want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, ―Thank Goodness. It’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.‖
Cheep up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember: be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? Give it a try and see what happens. 26. The main idea of the text is . Doing homework is an important part of learning. Homework is a chance to practice what you have learned. It is also a chance to ―show off‖ what you know. Although homework is not always fun, it is something that needs to be done.
Where do you work when you are completing your homework? Riding the bus on the way home is not a good time or place to do homework.
You need a place where you are comfortable but have a surface on which to write or put your books. You also need enough light so the work will not strain your eyes. A desk or kitchen table near a lamp or overhead light is a good place to work.
When do you do your homework? Some students work best right after school. Others need time to relax or eat a snack before they can get into the work. Think about when you are most alert and ready to work. Is it first thing in the morning? Right before or after dinner? Pick a time when you are able to concentrate well, and make that your homework time. If you sit down ready to work at the same time each day, you are more likely to do well on your homework.
How do you remember what assignments you have each night? The best way to make sure you don’t forget any assignments is to write them on a planning calendar or agenda. Keep the assignments for all your classes in one place, and you will know where to find them when it is time to do your homework.
Another tip for completing your homework is to plan ahead. If you have regular assignments, like spelling tests on Friday or vocabulary tests on Tuesday, don’t wait until the night before the test to study! Work on the assignment a little bit each night during the week. It won’t seem like so much work when you do it a little at a time. 31. What is the main topic of this passage? A. B. A desk in your room. C. In a bus on the way home. D. In the daylight.
33. What should you know about yourself when thinking about when to do your homework? A. When I am most alert and ready to work. B. Where I like to work.
C. How long I can go without a snack. D. Whether it is first thing in the morning.
34. When is the best time for most students to complete their homework? A. Before school when they are fresh.
B. After school when they still remember the work clearly. C. After dinner when they are no longer hungry.
