Specification for the Reading Test
Test Purpose
The reading test is an achievement test designed to access students’ progress on the reading course at the end of the term. Test Domain
Theoretical Construct : reading ability at the elementary-level. Operations :
a) to understand the topic and main idea;
b) to recognize words and word groups associating with their corresponding graphic symbols;
c) to deduce the meaning of words by contextual clues; d) to understand the relations within sentences; e) to understand the conceptual meaning; f) to generalize and draw the conclusion; Test Takers
The test takers are the middle school students who have taking the elementary-level reading course, both male and female. Test Context
Test Types: short passage, timetable. Topic: daily life, popular science, hobby.
Focus: Test tasks or items should focus on checking students’ knowledge, comprehension and application of specified skills, with more emphasis on comprehension and application. Test Length:
There will be four texts of no more than 400 words each. Test Methods
skimming, scanning and extensive reading , intensive reading.

It is advised that students be informed of the procedures of test administration beforehand. Test instructions should be read to the students before the test begins. Test instructions can be delivered either in English or in Chinese as is seen appropriate to the occasion. Supervisors are expected to administer the test strictly in accordance with the stated procedures. Measures should be taken to maintain a supportive testing environment throughout the test.
