and fruits made her excited. “When I grow up, I shall work in the garden like dad,” she would think.
Then one day, dad brought her some books, notebooks, pencils, and an eraser because she would go to school soon. Molly had seen her elder brother sharpening(削) his pencil everyday. Every time he sharpened the pencil, it looked smaller. And his eraser also became smaller because he used it everyday.
Suddenly, she had an idea. Why not plant a pencil and an eraser as dad planted the roses? Molly filled a flowerpot (花盆) with earth. She stuck a pencil in it, with the sharpened end pointing upwards. She fixed the eraser on the top of the pencil. How surprised everyone would be when her pencil and eraser started growing! She hid her pot behind tall plants.
Molly watered her pot daily. Everyday she would look carefully for signs of growing. She wondered why her pencil and eraser did not grow.
One day she asked her dad, “Why is my plant not growing, dad?” “What plant?”
Molly showed him her pot with the pencil and the eraser stuck on it. Dad laughed and said,
“My little girl, pencils and erasers don’t grow on their own. They grow in you. When you go to school, you’ll understand and feel their growing inside you!”
“Then what flowers will they grow inside me?”
“That’s up to you! They’ll grow in the way you’d like!”

Owning Books
We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must be treated with punctiliousness, with enough careful attention. You must see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages.
But books are for use, not for show; you should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passages in books is that this practice
enables you to remember more easily the important sayings, to refer to them quickly, and then in later years, it is like visiting a forest where you once walked in.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth; this habit can
here be developed with every advantage. The best wallpaper is books; they are more varied in color and appearance than any wallpaper, they are more attractive in design, and if you sit alone in the room in the
6
firelight, you are surrounded (包围) with close friends. The knowledge that they are there in common
thought is both encouraging and refreshing. Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. They are part of history; the best part of personality.
Book – friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoy the most truly great society in the world whenever you want it. The great dead are beyond our physical (身体的) reach, and the great living are usually almost as too far to reach. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Carlyle or Dumas or Dickens. And there is no doubt that in these books you see these men at their best. They “laid themselves out” they did their best to entertain (娱乐) you, to make a favorable impression. You are necessary to them as an audience is to an actor; only instead of seeing them masked, you look into their inside heart of heart.
48. The underlined word punctiliousness refers to __________.
A. expectation B. admiration C. great care D. nice view 49. The writer’s attitude towards books is like _________.
A. walking into an old forest B. treating a guest in the house C. showing out a private library D. talking to great dead and living
50. The best wallpaper, according to writer, is _______ .
A. colors B. books C. library D. friends
51. Shakespeare is mentioned here to show it’s ______ to talk to the great people through books.
A. easy B. nice C. hard D. common
D. Get it free!

Mike was a good and well-trained boy. His parents loved him very much. He did everything well, but Mike had one bad habit. He ate a lot of sweets and chocolates. Those were his favorite. He just couldn’t refuse. His mother always told him, “Mike, don’t eat so many sweets. You will get toothaches.”
His mother used to keep all the sweets in a glass jar (罐子). It had a narrow mouth and a tight lid on it.
One day when his mother went to the market, Mike saw that his father was asleep. So he walked carefully and slowly to the kitchen and got the sweet jar. With great
effort, he opened the tight lid and put his hand in the narrow mouth. Mike picked a fist (拳头) full of sweets. But when he tried to pull his hand out, it got stuck (卡) in the jar.
Mike’s father was awake and watching. He said to Mike, “You have picked up too many sweets in your fist. It’s more than your little hand can keep. Your fist cannot come out of the jar. Let go of the sweets and pick only one sweet in your two fingers and you can pull your hand out easily. Always take as much as you can control.”
Mike pulled out his hand from the jar easily and he learned a lesson for his life, too.
61. What was Mike’s bad habit?
62. Did his mother use to keep the sweets in a glass jar? 63. Where was the sweet jar?
