The oldest subway system in China is the Beijing Subway. Before the government undertook the building of a subway system, the only means of public transport in Beijing were buses and trolleybuses. In 1965, the Chinese government approved the construction of a subway line. The tunnels for the line were all dug by in 1969. However, the opening of the new subway was postponed until 1971, when the platforms and stations were finally completed. In 1984, a second subway line was completed. The Beijing Subway grew slowly until 2000, with only one new section being added to the two lines.
Then in 2001, Beijing was chosen to host the 2008 Olympics. As a result, between 2002 and 2008 the system was enlarged. Altogether, six new lines were built in order to convey crowds of people coming to the Olympics, and to make transport in Beijing more user-friendly. Even after the Olympics, the growth of the Beijing Subway has continued, and there will be 19 lines in total in the coming few years.

When people tour Europe, they usually visit the UK, France, Germany, or Italy. These are certainly worthwhile places to visit, but in Europe, there is a hidden treasure—Belgium.
Belgium is in the middle of Western Europe. It covers only 30,000 square kilometers, yet its population is over ten million, making it one of the most crowded countries in Europe.
For most of its history, Belgium was controlled by foreigners, like Romans, Germans and the French. Belgium finally won its independence in 1830. Today, the capital city, Brussels, is home to the European Union, an organization of European nations. Belgian society is divided into three different groups. Each group speaks different languages. Belgian universities, TV channels and newspapers may use Dutch, French and German.
Two things that all Belgians share are a love of chocolate and beer. Belgium produces over 170 million kilograms of chocolate each year and 100 litres of beer are consumed on average per year.
No matter whether you wish to try a strawberry beer or walk through the streets of the old Europe, Belgium is place for you. Come to Belgium and experience something new!

Albert Einstein is not only one of the greatest scientists of all time, but also a really great person. He was interesting. When he started to work in America, someone asked him what he
needed. He asked for a big waste-paper basket to hold all of his mistakes. This shows that he knew even the cleverest man in the world can only learn by making mistakes.
Einstein was also very modest. He once wrote a letter to a young girl to tell her not to worry about her Maths homework because he thought Maths was difficult too.
Einstein regarded time as very valuable. He thought it was a waste of time to remember things that could be found in a book. That?s why he never remembered his own phone number, which was in the phone book. It is true that if we are going to do great things in our lives, we cannot waste time.
Einstein liked to joke too. In one exam a student asked him why all the questions were the

same as last year?s. Einstein replied the questions were the same but the answers were different!
If we ever feel like giving up when we have problems, we should think of Einstein. Einstein kept working hard and surprised the world with his achievements. So, never be discouraged!

What is the most fun you can have in 21 hours and 23 minutes? On 15th October 2003, Yang Liwei answered this question. His journey into space took him 600,000 kilometres into orbit, around the earth 14 times, in just over 21 hours. It made him China?s first astronaut in space. He had worked towards this achievement for many years.
Born in 1965, Yang had wanted to fly since he was a young boy. His friends and teachers from Suizhong County in north-eastern Liaoning Province have all said that he loved science and technology from a young age. He always talked of wanting to learn how to fly. His dream was encouraged by his parents as well as his older sister and younger brother.
In the end, Yang was indeed successful. His name will go down in history with those of Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard, the first Russian and American astronauts. The people of China can be proud of Yang Liwei, and young people all over the world can look up to him as an example of a man who managed to live his dream.
