This course will help develop your ability to identify key issues, analyze available information, select appropriate strategies, and articulate the reasons for choosing a particular strategy. These skills, which build on the knowledge you have gained from other College of Business courses, are fundamental to your success in business. Just as in the practice of business, there are situations of ambiguity, partial facts and uncertainty which you will encounter during the course. Facing these challenges in the supportive environment of the classroom will give you the opportunity to learn different approaches, develop critical thinking skills and test your achievement. Because of the nature of the objectives, it is important that you participate on a regular basis. Accordingly, you must come to class prepared, having read the assigned reading and cases before hand, analyzed the discussion questions for the assigned cases, and kept abreast of current business news. Class participation is part of your grade. If you regularly come to class in a timely fashion, ask relevant questions, participate in discussions, contribute examples of work experiences or current events that are related to class discussions, and demonstrate a positive attitude, you will do better. You may also gain credit for participation by emailing me your well considered thoughts and observations on a regular basis. CLASS PARTICIPATION AND IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS (20%) 课题出勤率+课堂表现+课堂随机回答问题

In order to get ten 20% of class participation, students should come to class on a regular basis and contribute to class discussions. Students should show evidence of adequate preparation (i.e., having read and understood the assigned materials).

GROUP CASE DISCUSSION AND PRESENTATION (40%) 小组案例研究报告说明

Students will form a team of 3-5 members who are in the same section. Cases will be assigned to each team and will be professionally presented and discussed in depth. The instructor will assign each team the day of their presentations in class.

Everyone in the class is expected to be familiar with all cases assigned in class, and be ready to discuss relevant issues found in the cases. This means that teams not presenting are also required to address all case discussion questions, share your ideas, and provide constructive comments on the presentations given by other teams. Each team is evaluated based on its ability to generate more interesting discussions, and its contribution towards other students’ learning and understanding of the course materials.

PREPARATION OF THE TYPE-WRITTEN CASE DISCUSSION*

Each team is required to hand in a type-written case discussion (5-page, double-spaced, 1-inch margins on all sides, 12-point font Times News Roman or equivalent). Your case write-up should include, but not limit to the following items:

1. Situation Analysis. Apply relevant tools (e.g., SWOT, PEST, and Five Forces Analyses) to briefly describe general environmental, industry, competitor, and internal analyses based on the information from the case. 2. Case Discussion Questions. Address all questions raised at the end of each case. Justify your answers based on the information from the case and try to apply the concepts and frameworks studied in the class to clarify the issues and support your position. In addressing and discussing each of the issues, you need to show your thorough understanding of the international management concepts and frameworks covered in the course. * The cases assigned in this course are designed to familiarize students with international management issues and to help student gain better understanding of international management concepts and frameworks. They are NOT designed for case study approach in which students are required to analyze the problems strategically and propose specific recommendation and action plans.

Be prepared to handle questions and constructive criticism.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT AND PRESENTATION (40%) 个人案例研究报告说明

You are required to work on a term project alone, dealing specifically with the development of a comprehensive international strategic plan for a multinational corporation expanded internationally. This plan will cover several issues encountered by a multinational company, such as the analysis of international markets, the evaluation of entry modes, the implementation of international strategy and structure. The detailed outline and project written guideline will be distributed by your instructor in class.

A good approach to this assignment is to look in back issues of magazines such as The Economist, Fortune, or Business Week for an article that will tell why a particular company’s advantage has persisted. Write a summary of the reasons the company achieved sustained competitive advantage, not to exceed five pages. To be turned in and graded at the presentation day.
