I. Daily Activities: 1. Kathy's Schedule Kathy is a writer.
She works for a newspaper, and she also writes books. Her daily schedule varies.
Her schedule changes everyday. She often works late at night.
As a result, she doesn’t like to get up early. Q
Sometimes, she gets up so late that she doesn't have time for breakfast. For example, she didn't get up until 9:15. She didn’t have time for breakfast. She just ate a cup of coffee.
Then she worked on her computer at home until 11:30. Q
She left home at 11:45 and took a bus downtown to her office at newspaper. It is now 2:00 and she is eating a late lunch. She is very hungry.
So she is having a large lunch.
She is hungry, because she didn’t eat the breakfast. Q
Late this afternoon, she is going to have a meeting with her boss. She is going to make a request.
She wants to take a week off, so that she can go to Paris. Her best friend who with her parents is going to get married. Q
This everying she is going to interview an important person.
the interview is schedule to last an hour, from 6:30 until 7:30.
She is going to interview the person about problem of nuclear waste. After the interview she's going to work late.
She wants to finish the story before she goes to bed. Q
She thinks it's going to be an important story.
We all need energy but we have to think carefully about safety.
2. Diane's Schedule
Diane is a house wife and a mother. Her husband, Dick, drives a taxi. Their two children both to school. Q
Their school is about 20 minutes awry by car. Q
This morning, dine got up early at 6:30.
She cooked breakfast for her family at 7:00.
At 7:15 they sat down together and ate the breakfast. Q
And 7:45 she drove her kids to school.
After taking her kids to school she and her friend went shopping together. They went to a shopping center and bought some clothes for their children. After that she and her friend went to a health club. Q
They stayed the health club for about an hour. Her friend trying to lose the weight. Q
Now Diane is backing home. She is cleaning the house. She doesn’t have much time.
In about an hour, at 3:00 she is going to pick up her kids at school. Q
After dinner, Diane is going to take a class.
Twice a week in the evening, she studies the painting. Diane enjoys her class very much.
According to her teacher, she is getting to be pretty good.

1. Our Planet, Earth
This is our planet, Earth.
It's one of nine planets that travel around our sun. It's the third planet from the sun.
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
The second closest planet to the sun is Venus. Our planet is 93 million miles from the sun. The sun gives us the energy that we need. Q
The sun is very important to us all. It gives us heat and light.
Without it there would be not life from on earth.
If we were closer to the sun, it would be too hot to us. Our planet would burn.
If we were farther from the sun, it would be too cold to us. Our planet would freeze.
As you can see, the balance of nature is very important. In nature, small changes can make big differences. Q
2. Air, Water & Pollution
Beside energy from the sun, we also need water and air. Without water and air, there would be no life.
Without enough water, there aren't enough plants and trees. Plants and trees produce air that we breathe. We also need water to grow our food.
In some parts of our world, there isn't enough water.
Without enough water, food can't grow, and people don't have enough food to eat. Q
Condition must be right for life to exist.
When conditions are not right, life cannot exist.
For example, millions of years ago there were forms of life that no longer exist.
They die out because conditions changed. Q
Clear air and clean water, we need them both to live our lives.
The mountains, the rivers, the forests and all of nature are a part of us.
This beautiful planet of ours is our home.
To take care of the world is to take care of ourselves. Let's work together to keep our world alive and well.

I. Planning Ahead
1. Departure
Next week Max is going on a business trip.
He's going to fly to London from San Francisco. Q
He tried to buy airplane tickets last week, but the flight was full. Yesterday his travel agent called him and told him there was a space on the flight.
Max is going to get the ticket in the mail tomorrow. Q
He's going to fly on British Airlines.
It takes about 10 hours flight from San Francisco to London.
If he leaves on Saturday afternoon, he'll arrive London on Sunday Morning. Q
Max is going to arrive in London on a Sunday.
The day after he arrived London, he's going to attend a meeting. However, he'll probably very tired.
The time difference between London and San Francisco is 8 hours.
That means when it's late night in London, its afternoon in San Francisco. As a result, it's often hard to sleep in the hotel at night.
Max will probably watch a late movie on TV before he goes to bad.
If he still can't sleep, he may telephone his wife and children in San Francisco.
It's always nice to travel and see the world, but Max misses his family. Whenever he is away from home, he looks forward to coming back. As the same goals: There's no place like home.
2. Choices
When he lands in London, he'll claim his baggage and go through customs.
Then he'll have to decide how to get his hotel.
One choice is to go by Taxi. But the Taxi fare is expensive. Another choice is to go by bus or subway.
In London the subway system is called the underground. Q
Max isn't sure what he will do.
If he is tired, he may decide to take a taxi. On the other hand, he may decide to take a bus.
If he decides to take a bus or a taxi, he can see the countryside. Q
Once he arrives at his hotel, he'll check in.
Hotels are expensive in London, but weekend rate are a bit less.
Sometime it's possible to get a cheaper rate if you stay for several days. Q
Max has a good travel agent, so he's going to get a 20% discount. Q
3. Meeting a Friend
After he checks in to his room, Max is going to telephone a friend. One of his best friends, John, lives in Brighton. Brighton is about an hour south of London by train. Max's friend, John, is a famous writer. Max is looking forward to seeing him. Q
Whenever they get together, they go out to dinner and talk about many things.
It's always interesting to talk to John. John has an interesting mind.
He's always thinking about new stories and new projects.
Last year, for example, he wrote a story that appeared on television. It was a story about a man who lost his memory.
Now he's working on a new story that will appear on television next year. Q
John also knows a lot about wine.
Whenever they have dinner together, John chooses a great bottle of wine. They have to be careful not to drink too much.
When they finish eating, they both try to pay the bill. Sometimes Max pays, sometime John pays. Q
