They swim lovely along the shore, looking for underwater greens to feed on. But these days, along Florida’s western coast, something is mixing with the seas grass that manatees like to eat. And it’s making them sick --- even killing them.

It’s a poisonous form of algae, usually called “red tide” because of its color. Algae are plant-like organisms (微生物) that live mainly in water. Most are harmless, but not red tide. When it gets mixed in with the grass and the manatees eat it, they get so sick that they can’t even swim.

“They’re basically paralyzed (瘫痪的), and they become unconscious, ” said Virginia Edmonds, an animal care manager. Manatees are mammals and they need to surface often to breathe in air. If a manatee is paralyzed, it can’t swim and will drown.

As of Monday, the current red tide outbreak has killed at least 174 manatees since the beginning of this year. That has already beaten Florida’s record-high number for manatee deaths in a single year --- and we still have nearly nine months to go!

The experts aren’t sure when the red tide outbreak will end. So many more manatees are in danger. The situation has gotten so desperate that Florida zoos have rescued at least a dozen manatees. You can find manatees anywhere from Brazil up to Florida --- and throughout much of the Caribbean Sea.

In fact, the manatee is officially considered an endangered species. Thanks to the US government’s protection, Florida’s manatee population has grown to approximately 5,000 in recent years. But the red tide is threatening their survival. Some experts suspect that pollution from farms even might be fueling the red tide outbreak, because fertilizer that’s used on farms

often winds up in water. And when that fertilized water runs off into the Gulf of Mexico, it makes things grow faster --- just like on land.

If you’re in Florida and you see a manatee that doesn’t look right, wildlife officials would like you to call them. They’ve set up a free hotline --- 888-404-3922. “We want to preserve the manatees for the future of Florida,” said Martine, a veterinarian (兽医) with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. “We want future generations to enjoy manatees the way we enjoy them right now.”

A team of researchers from Oxford University in Britain had demonstrated a self-driving car that is obviously different from such cars being tested by Audi, Ford, etc. It’s much cheaper

because it’s based on off-the-shelf (现成的) technology wired and controlled by an ordinary iPad. Instead of using GPS to understand where it is and where it needs to go, the car learns routes when a person is driving, and then asks after it’s got it down,if the driver would like the computer to take over.

It’s a radical(激进的) idea, and one that deserves attention, because as time passes it’s becoming clear that people believe computers would be better drivers. It had been proven that computers are able to react more quickly to driving conditions, make smarter decisions, don’t take risks, and don’t make mistakes in focusing. They don’t drink, which means accidents due to drunk driving could be reduced dramatically if the computer could take over when someone needs to get home from the bar. And the team says drivers don’t need their cars to know everything about every road, condition or possible danger. Instead, they just need to know how to get from one point to another, and to do a good job of it when asked.

To that end, the researchers have added cameras, lasers and of course, a central computer to process information and a simple interface (接口), which for now means a regular iPad. In practice, they would learn how to get to and from places that the driver frequents, such as their work place of grocery store. Once it has it down, the computer asks the driver if they’d like a rest, if so, they simply tap the iPad, and the car takes over.

It’s very neat and simple, and doesn’t require nearly the same degree of gadgetry (小机件) as those being tested by other car companies. The researchers say people might be able to get the total price of the system below a hundred dollars. And of course, the iPad can be lifted out and carried away for other purposes when not being used as a driver assist. 32. How are the cars tested by Oxford University different from others?

A. They depend on GPS to understand the location. B. They depend on the technology available at a low cost C. They should develop a good relationship with their owners D. They should remember the places that their owners frequently go. 33. Computers are believed to be better drivers mainly because ____________.

A. they seldom make mistakes in focusing B. they get more skilful in avoiding dangers

C. they can react more quickly and make better decisions

D. they are more familiar with every road they go 34. We can infer from the text that the iPad _______________. A. acts as a surface for drivers to connect with gadgetry inside B. has replaced cameras, lasers, and a central computer C. will become a new hit since it is used in a self-driving car D. cannot be removed when it is not used 35. What is the author’s tone of writing this text?

A. Serious. B. Persuasive. C. Objective. D. Subjective. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Whether you are in a professional or social environment, treat other people with respect. While everyone is different, all people like to be treated with dignity, treated fairly and made to feel as though they matter. Keeping a few rules in mind regarding how to show respect will resolve problems easily when they occur. 36 Punctuality

Be punctual. Actions speak louder than words, and one of the easiest ways to send a nonverbal message of disrespect to someone is by showing up late for an appointment or meeting. One tip for ensuring that you are punctual is to pretend that the appointment is 15-30 minutes before its actual time. 37 Listening to others

Showing respect for others includes allowing them to speak uninterrupted, listening to what they are saying and acting on reasonable requests that they have for improving the relationship. If another person is explaining something to you, when he is finished, repeat your understanding of the conversation to assure him that you are on the same page. Listening is one of hardest, yet simplest things to do to demonstrate respect. 38 Empowering others

Respecting people involves not just allowing for differences in terms of their goals and ambitions, but going one step further and encouraging them to follow their dreams, no matter how far-fetched or impossible they may be. Discouraging people from achieving their goals can come

across as condescending(居高临下的) from their view points. 39 Manners

Do not underestimate the power of manners as a way of showing respect. 40 Likewise, refrain from speaking loudly on a cell phone in public places or texting while you are in the company of others.

A.You do not think their time is valuable.

B.And it belittles their sense of ability and importance.

C.Events beyond your control may make it impossible to arrive on time. D.And it will also reduce the likelihood that interpersonal disputes will arise. E.This allows you extra time in case an unexpected event (e.g. traffic) occurs.

F.Saying “please”, “thank you” and “you’re welcome” develops goodwill between people. G.Because the natural tendency is to talk, few people are capable of truly listening.
