When it comes to traveling, sometimes taking a journey alone can be great. It allows for a time of self reflection , relaxation and self-discovery. The independence gained allows for the opportunity to experience your destination exactly the way you want.

Plan where to stay

So you've finally decided to visit Prague in East Europe. Because you'll be all by yourself, the planning of your trip is automatically different. Are you going on a small budget, or would you rather go all-out and book a room in a fancy hotel? Because traveling alone means your money is funding the trip, a wise choice would be to stay in youth hostels to cut your costs. Cast away the wrong idea that these places are uncomfortable and dirty. It is quite easy to book a room at a hostel via the Internet.

Luggage

What luggage you take, make sure it's easy to handle. The best solution is to take one hold-all, a suitcase or a backpack, an then a smaller bag which you can hang loosely from your shoulder. It's also a good idea to keep a change of clothing in your shoulder bag in case your suitcase or backpack gets lost by an airline or bus company.

Carry a dictionary

If you're heading for a foreign country, don't leave home without a bilingual (双语的)dictionary. Although a strong grasp of Czech will prove quite difficult, it is still important to learn phrases like “thank you”, “hello please” and “I don't know he charged money for his time”, in case you’re in a trouble.

Bring a credit card

Along with cash, bring a credit card as an emergency method of payment and make sure to take note of your credit card company's customer service line in case of loss or theft. That way, you can cancel your card immediately and have a new one delivered to you while on your trip (if possible).

While having fun is important, so is safety. Be carefree, but don't throw caution to the wind. 1. The author recommends youth hostels because they are . A. popular and pleasant B. cost-effective and tidy C. safe but uncomfortable D. cheap but inconvenient

In the city of Fujisawa, Japan, lives a woman named Atsuko Saeki. When she was a teenager, she dreamed of going to the United States. Most of what she knew about American life was from the textbooks she had read. “I had a picture in mind: Daddy watching TV in the living room, Mummy baking cakes and their teenage daughter off to the cinema with her boyfriend.”

Atsuko arranged to attend college in California. When she arrived, however, she found it was not her imagined world. “People were struggling with problems and often seemed tense,” she said.

One of her hardest classes was physical education. “We played volleyball.” she said. “The other students were good at it, but I wasn't” One afternoon, the instructor asked Atsuko to hit the hall to her teammates so they could knock it over the net- NO problem for most people, but it daunted Atsuko. She was afraid of losing face if she failed.

A young man on her team sensed what she was going through. “He walked up to me and whispered, ‘Come on. You can do that.’”

“You will never understand how those words of encouragement made me feel. The four words ‘You can do that.’ made me feel like crying with happiness.”

She made it through the class. Perhaps she thanked the young man; she is not sure.

Six years have passed. Atsuko is back in Japan, working as a salesclerk. “I have never forgotten the words.” she said, “When things are not going so well. I think of them.”

She is sure that the young man had no idea how much his kindness meant to her. “He probably doesn't even remember it,” she said. That may be the lesson. Whenever you say something to a person cruel or kind---- you have no idea how long the words will stay. She's all the way over in Japan, but still she hears those four simple words: You can do that.

4. When Atsuko arrived California, she might feel . A. excited B. hopeful C. struggling D. disappointed

5. What does the underlined word “daunted” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. scared B. shocked C. comforted D. encouraged

A. confidence can bring about huge success B. one should be very careful about his words C. hard work and devotion will definitely pay off D. casual encouragement can make a big difference

Dogs really are our best friends, according to a Swedish study that says pet dog ownership could reduce heart disease. A study of 3.4 million people between 40 and 80 found that having a dog was associated with a 23% reduction in death from heart disease and a 20% lower risk of dying from any cause over the 12 years of the study.

Dog owners show better responses to stress (their blood pressure and pulse rates don't get high), and have higher levels of physical activity and slightly lower cholesterol(胆固醇) levels. The American Heart Association (AHA) was sufficiently swayed (动摇) by a review of dozens of studies to release a statement in 2013 saying that owning a dog “was probably” associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Their unwillingness to more strongly approve dog owner ship is because most studies are what is called observational--researchers note an association, but can't prove a cause- and-effect link. This means that other factors might explain why dog owners are healthier than, say, goldfish owners---for example, perhaps only people who are fit in the first place buy pets that need daily walks.

Tove Fall, an epidemiologist and the lead author of this latest study, says they tried their best to allow for any differences in education, existing ill-health and lifestyles between those with and without dogs. The study found the biggest positive impact of having a dog was on people living alone. “It seems that a dog can be a substitute for living with other people in terms of reducing the risk of dying.” says Fall. “Dogs encourage you to walk, they provide social support and they make life more meaningful. If you have a dog, you interact more with other people. If you do get ill and go into hospital and you have a dog, there's a huge motivation to try to get back home.”

Of course, getting a dog and watching it from your sofa while you eat fatty food is not going to reduce your risk of heart disease. And a toy dog may look cute, but won't have any effect either.

8. The AHA is cautious about the statement because A. owning a dog doesn't actually reduce heart disease B. related studies don't provide any observational proof C. a solid cause-and-effect relationship hasn't been found D. dog owners in the studies are much healthier than others 9. Who may benefit most from having a dog, according to Tove? A. The ones who suffer from bad disease. B. The ones who lead a meaningful life C. The ones who stay with no relatives D. The ones who have huge motivation

10. We can infer from the last paragraph that . A. fatty food is a big cause of heart disease B. cute dogs don't help cure heart disease C. resting in a sofa increases risk of diseases D. owning a dog has nothing to do with health

11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Dog Ownership Leading to Happiness B. Owning a dog, Less Heart Problems C. Healthy Lifestyle with a Cute Dog D. Dogs, human's Best Friends Ever

D

Among the tens of millions of messages posted online for British physicist Stephen Hawking, who passed away on March 14th, the one most “liked” is: “The person who knows the most about stars has flown to the stars.”

Many people have expressed their respect for and condoled(吊唁) the death of the most important theoretical physicist since Albert Einstein. And the media published innumerable reports on his achievements.

Hawking is known most for two of his books, The Universe in a Nutshell and A Brief History of Time. In fact, A Brief History of Time had sold more than 25 million copies globally by 2014, making it one of the most popular science books ever. It has even been translated into more than 40 languages and read by people across the world.

His achievements on gravitational singularity theorems(引力奇点定理) and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation are also enough to make him a great theoretical physicist and worthy of the honor given to him. To quote Sheldon Cooper, a character in the US TV series The Big Bang Theory: “Professor Hawking, you are a gift to mankind.”

Hawking made three visits to China, in 1985, 2002 and 2006, Even last November, he delivered a video speech on Tencent WE conference. When he opened a real-name account on Chinese social media micro blog, 2 million users followed him within two days, many of whom, still students, expressed their interest in scientific research.

His works are a sound source of future scientific research in China. The country has 96.9 million primary school students, and the more they are attracted to the mysteries and charms of science at a young age, because of popular science works, the higher the number of researchers there will be in the future.

However, popular science books by one foreign physicist alone cannot be enough to make pupils interested in science. If more Chinese scientists spend more time writing popular science books and giving talks at the gatherings of youths, the situation could change for the better. The question is: Are our scientists ready to take up the challenge?

12. What do we know about Stephen Hawking?

A. He flew to explore stars and encountered a deadly accident. B. His achievements are more significant than Albert Einstein.

C. His books have received wide recognition around the world. D. He has contributed to the TV series The Big Bang Theory. 13. What can arouse kids' interest in science, according to the author? A. Social media. B. Science works. C. Scientific research. D. Gatherings of youths.

14. The purpose of the last part of the text is . A. to encourage scientists to conduct more research B. to tell about the situation of scientific community C to honor Professor Hawking for his achievements D. to urge scientists to inspire more youths in science 15. Where can you probably read the text? A. A research paper. B. A physics textbook. C. A science fiction. D. A news report.
