Top Ten Tips for Travelling in Japan

1. Do not forget to take off your shoes

Please do as the Romans do when you are in Japan. You need to take off your shoes whether entering the hotel room, visiting the Japanese home, or going to the meeting room and the office. In short, as long as you come into the room, you have to put on slippers, and sometimes you even need to change into slippers twice. The custom of changing into slippers cannot be violated in Japan. Therefore, do not forget to take off your shoes before entering the room.

2. Make sure to take an umbrella when going out

Remember to take an umbrella when you go out. Japan has a maritime climate and the volatile barometer, so it is considerate to prepare an umbrella. Take a folding umbrella when you go traveling and take a gentleman umbrella when you do business or visit relatives. In Japan, a long umbrella can stand in the basket, which is in front of most stores or beside the private residential gate, but a folding umbrella cannot be put into it.

3. Tipping is not expected when spending money

Like many other Asian countries, Japan has no culture of tipping because a 10%-15% service charge has been added in the bills of large hotels and restaurants. If there is no special service for taxies, tipping is unnecessary. It is the same case when you consume in beauty salons, barber shops, bars, nightclubs and other places.

4. Drink tap water whenever you feel thirsty

Japan's tap water is safe to drink. You can see tap water spout in stations and large public places. Mineral water is available for guests to drink in the big hotels and restaurants.

5. Self-brought mobile phones will not work

You do not need to take your mobile phone when going to Japan because it will not work at all. In addition, as Japan's voltage is 110 volts, you will fail to use the battery

chargers of your own camera and video recorder if the chargers are not compatible with 110-240 volts.

6. What to buy and what not to buy

The small household electrical appliances in Japanese duty-free shops have a very high quality and a low price. Thus, it is decent and affordable to take some electrical equipment back as gifts to relatives and friends. However, it is uneconomical to buy children’s toys, clothes and shoes which are made in china and far from cheap. Besides, bear in mind to take enough films and camera dedicated lithium batteries abroad because they cost much more than those made home. It is almost impossible if you decide to go shopping in the evening because Japanese department stores and shops are closed in around 7:00p.m. (Only few stores open until 9:00p.m.).

7. The subway is convenient and cheap

If you want to go shopping alone in Japan, choose the subway——the cheapest transportation. Japanese subway traffic is highly-developed. The dense subway lines look like spider webs and the subway station runs straight to the skyscrapers. Obviously, it offers a large choice of transportation. Owing to the high level of consumption, taking a taxi is certainly very expensive. As a result, if you need to pay for yourself, take the subway without hesitation. In addition, you’d better take your hotel's business card in case you get lost on the street and can not speak Japanese at the same time. So it is convenient to take a taxi back if you have the hotel business card.

8. Exchanging currency is inconvenient

In Japan, the money shall be converted in foreign exchange banks or other legitimate currency exchange places. You also need to show your own passport. But the exchanging transaction of Japan Bank is only available from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On top of that, banks are closed all day on Saturdays, Sundays and major holidays. Generally speaking, people only choose to exchange cash in the hotel, however, it is slightly more expensive than in the bank.

9. Making a phone call

Red and pink telephones are available to Japanese domestic phones and they only accept 10 yen coin (ten yuan for three minutes). While green and golden telephones can be used to make international long-distance calls and they receive phone cards and ten or a hundred yen coin. Of course, the best way is buying an IP phone card.

10. Customers must bring their own items

Japanese hotel rooms seldom provide toothbrushes and toothpastes and you’d better prepare slippers by yourself. What’s more, it is difficult to have a punctual dining during the journey. Due to the high local life index of Japan, you had better prepare some snacks in order to have something to eat when hungry. You can go on a journey with a mask in spring and with sunglasses, a hat in snowing winter. Remember not to wear high-heeled shoes. You had better bring your own related supplies in order to enjoy the enormous hot springs.
