could still clearly remember the people who sit beside her “special”seat, and the content of their conversation, displaying her good at observing, and careful character.
However, these behaviors also reflect her simple, even monotonous life style, and her shy and unsociable character. She went to the garden every Sunday, never with a friend, just herself. And what is eccentric is that she liked to eavesdrop the people’s talks who sit beside her.Why didn’t she interpose others’ topics and further make friends with them and share more things with them? Why did she just want to enter their life in mind through imagination? From this,Miss Brill’s sensitive, unsociable, lonely characters are presented out.
When the old man and the old lady who at first shared her “special”seat left,a young couple came. She was waiting to hear their talks with great interest and pleasure, but disappointedly, what she was waiting is only a humiliation and scoffing. After that, she silently left.No words. No quarreling with the couple. This evinces that her easygoing, calm, and feeble characters. 2.Characters from Internal World 2.1 Perceptions to the outside world
Through listening the side people’s talks,Miss Brill experienced others’ life, from which she usually brought something vital to her monotonous life.By doing that, she was experiencing numerous kinds of fluctuations in moods, generating her own opinions and arousing her own good or bad mood.In the fourth paragraph,”Miss Brill had wanted to shake her.”In the eighth paragraph,”Dear me!Miss Brill didn’t know whether to admire that or not!”?In the eighth paragraph too,”she rather thought they going to meet that afternoon.she described where she’d been--everywhere,here,there,along by the sea.”We can see that she was not an adventurous, energetic woman, but full of avid desire for colorful life. 2.2Imaginations
By Miss Brill’s memories of what happened beside her last Sunday make her brain became active. While watching the people and their”plays”before her,she produced some subjective imaginations about what happened between the hero and heroine playing in front of her. Therefore, she has imaginative character.Except the spiritual fluctuations brought by the heroes and heroines,Miss Brill’s mood also moved and changed with the melodies from the band. The band’s instrumental performance promoted Miss Brill’s spirit to a climax, leading her to imagination and comprehension that life is a play, and everybody is an actor or actress and so she is also an indispensable member. She imagined that the old man whom she served by reading newspapers had revived and had a surprising conversation with her,”An actress, are ye?---Yes I have been an actress for a long time.”Suddenly,as if that she had found her existence value, the feeling of being needed. In that while, the light of life had illuminated her life, her mind. She was completely absorbed in the complacency of this discovering even though the comprehension and happy feeling lasted just a moment before the impolite young couple insulted her by rude words.Through these plentiful imaginations,we can learn Miss Brill’s imaginative and infirm characters.
3.Conclusion
Miss Brill lived in an unknown country, almost no friends,no hobbies. Her life was simple, boring, and impoverished. But she has her own way to find some fun and interest in life. Her jobs, teaching students English and reading newspapers to an old man, reveals that she is easygoing, patient, and calm. The description of the scene in the park evinces that she has careful
and good at observing characters. Her memories and imagination display her imaginative character and her response to the rude young couple reflects her feeble, sensitive and unsociable characters.Above all,Miss Brill lives alone, with few friends, but with the avid heart for life. She has too little relations with other people except her students. Her optimistic attitude is admiring, but her lonely life is pathetic.
