The Birth of Modern Poetry

When talking about poetry, most people will say that a poem is a text that has rhythm and rhyme. Famous are the lines by William Blake, 16 have clear rhythm and rhyme.

Tiger, tiger, burning bright, In the forest of the night.

17 people will add that poems must have a certain form, with a fixed number of lines and a fixed rhyme pattern, such as a sonnet(十四行诗). With rhyme, most people mean 18 rhyme of sound of words at the end of the lines. It is also true that much of the classical poetry looks like that. Except for some short songs and poems 19 (include) in his plays, all of Shakespeare’s greatest poems are sonnets.

John Milton was one of the first poets who started writing poems without rhyme at the end of the lines. He wrote other poems too, 20 he is famous for his long poems without rhyme. After Milton, almost every poet had a hand at this kind of poetry that was free of rhyme. Wordsworth and Keats 21 ( write ) some such poems, but that is not what 22 are famous for. This style of poetry became known 23 free verse. It was not until the twentieth century that modern poetry was 24 (real) developed. Modern poets wanted to break with all the 25 (tradition) forms of poetry. One of the characteristics of modern poetry is that it usually does not have rhyme at the end of a line, and it is also often about common topics.

II.阅读(共两节,25题,满分50分)

第一节: 阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a ?”

“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.” “We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation? ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.

One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked. The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.

I repeated the title slowly, and then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in this field?”

Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.” There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (依托) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---aged 13, 7, and 3.

Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a

6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”

Motherhood? What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

26. What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage? A. The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was. B. The recorder was impatient and rude.

C. The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced.

D. Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society.

27. How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation?

A. Curious. B. Puzzled. C. Indifferent. D. Interested. 28. How did the author feel when describing her job to the clerk? A. Calm. B. Panic-stricken. C. Confident. D. Proud.

29. Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author? A. Because the author cared little about rewards.

B. Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab.

C. Because she thought the author did admirable work. D. Because the writer did something she had little knowledge of.

30. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.

B. To argue that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect.

C. To show that the author had a grander job than Emily. D. To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.

The “standard of living” of any country means the average person’s share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country’s standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth.

“Wealth” in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: “goods” such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment.

A country’s capacity to produce wealth depends on many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends largely on a country’s natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are rich in coal and minerals, and have a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of these things, and some regions possess none of them. The U. S. A is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she has vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.

Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. China is perhaps as well off as the U. S. A. in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external wars, and, for this and other reasons, was unable to develop her resources. Sound and stable political conditions and freedom from foreign invasion enable a country to develop its natural resources peacefully and steadily, and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a country’s people. Old countries that have trained up numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians through many centuries are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. In addition, wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have more money for saving, and can put their savings into factories and machines which will help workers to produce more goods in their working days.

31. A country’s wealth depends upon______.

C. its money D. its ability to provide transport and entertainment

32. The word “foremost” means “_________”. A. most importantly B. regularly C. unavoidably D. lastly

33. The main idea of the second paragraph is that______. A. natural resources contribute greatly to a country’s wealth

B. the U. S. A. is one of the wealthiest countries in the world

C. the Sahara Desert is a very poor region

D. nothing but a country’s natural resources decides how rich a country can be

34. According to the 3rd paragraph, how many advantages can one country have over another in making use of its resources? A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D. 5 35. The second sentence in Paragraph 3 is______. A. the main idea of the paragraph

B. an example supporting the main idea of the paragraph C. the conclusion of the paragraph D. hardly related to the paragraph

Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspired kids’ imaginations world-wide, has celebrated its 50th anniversary.

On January 28, 1958, a man named Godtfred Kirk Christiansen created the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almost every child’s toy box. The simple building block has become one of the most well-known and popular toys around the world.

“The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children, and others, to develop their creativity and imagination,” said Charlotte Simonsen, a spokeswoman of the Danish Lego company.

The company’s building bricks allow an endless number of links. With just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego.

A half-century after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and pulling them apart. Also, the bricks made today can still interlock with those made in 1958.

Lego bricks are not just child’s play: they also attract the interest of adults. South Korean adventurer, Heo Young-Ho, who climbed Mount Everest in 1987, left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb.

After its great success,Lego experienced a severe crisis at the end of the 1990s, hit hard by fierce competition from electronic games. This so-called “Toy of the Century” then suffered a dark period that lasted several years.

With great efforts, the company began to prosper(繁荣、发展) again, and in 2006 it earned about 1.5 billion dollars in 130 countries. Seven boxes of Lego are now sold every second around the world, and 19 billion bricks are produced each year: enough to encircle the Earth five times!

36. The Lego bricks have remained popular in the past 50 years

because_______.

A. they are safe for young children

B. they are available to children everywhere in the world C. they make the children and even adults creative and imaginative

D. people can have unlimited links with two bricks

37. The author gave the example of South Korean adventurer Heo

Young-Ho in order to prove that

______.

A. Heo Youn-Ho also loved playing Lego bricks B. the Lego bricks made him a mountain climber

C. the Lego bricks not only interest children but also adults

D. the Lego bricks are a must for people on an adventure 38. It can be inferred from the text that ______.

A. there are 915 different links with just 6 bricks

B. the Lego Bricks Company is making less and less money C. the Lego Bricks can’t compare with computer games D. the bricks made today don’t change much compared with those made in 1958

39. The underlined word “hit” in the seventh paragraph means _____.

A. being defeated in a fight or a competition B. having a crash in an accident or a fight C. getting known through a song D. attacking somebody in a fight

40. Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Lego bricks: brilliant and struggling B. Lego bricks: an attraction of children

C. Lego bricks: making creativity and imagination D. Lego bricks: bringing fun

Calling for Safe Celebrations This Fourth of July

Last Fourth of July, Pete, a 14-year-old boy, was enjoying the lit-up skies and loud booms from the fireworks being set off in his neighborhood. Suddenly, the evening took a terrible turn. A bottle rocket shot into his eye, immediately causing him terrible pain. His family rushed him to the emergency room for treatment. As a result of the injury, Pete developed glaucoma and cataracts(青光眼及白内障). Today, Pete has

permanent vision loss in his injured eye because of his bottle rocket injury.

June is Fireworks Eye Safety Awareness Month, and through its Eye Smart campaign the American Academy of Ophthalmology wants to remind consumers to leave fireworks to professionals. “There is nothing worse than a Fourth of July celebration ruined by someone hit in the eye with a bottle rocket,” said Dr. John C. Hagan, clinical correspondent for the Academy and an ophthalmologist at Discover Vision Centers in Kansas City. “A safe celebration means letting trained professionals handle fireworks while you enjoy the show.”

According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 9,000 fireworks-related injuries happen each year. Of these, nearly half are head-related injuries, with nearly 30 percent of these injuries to the eye. One-fourth of fireworks eye injuries result in permanent vision loss or blindness. Children are the most common victims of firework abuse, with those fifteen years old or younger accounting for 50 percent of fireworks eye injuries in the United States. Dr. Hagan estimates that his practice sees more than 30 injuries each year from fireworks.

Even fireworks that many people consider safe represent a threat to the eyes. For children under the age of five, apparently harmless sparklers account for one-third of all fireworks injuries. Sparklers can burn at nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

41.What happened to Pete last Fourth of July? A. He was burned in a house fire. B. He was caught in a rain. C. He was injured in a fight. D. He was injured in the eye.

42.The American Academy of Ophthalmology calls on consumers to_______.

A. celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks

B. set off fireworks together with trained professionals C. stop celebrating the Fourth of July altogether

D. leave fireworks to professionals in their celebrations 43. How many fireworks eye injuries occur in the US each year? A. About 9,000. B. About 4,500. C. About 1,350. D. About 30. 44. Which of the following is not a result of eye injuries caused by fireworks?. A. Blindness.

B. Permanent vision loss. C. Glaucoma and cataracts. D. Head-related injuries.

45. What can we learn about sparklers from the passage? A. They may look safe.

B. Its temperature is not high enough to cause injuries. C. They are harmless to children.

D. They never cause any injuries to children aged over 5.

A team of Americans is planning the largest clean-up effort ever on Qomolangma. They will make the risky trip up the mountain next month.

The team of eight Americans will be guided by more than twenty Sherpas of Nepal(尼泊尔夏尔巴人). Their goal is to remove all the rubbish they see. They will spend two months cleaning up the mountain by gathering oxygen bottles, fuel containers, batteries, drink cans, human waste and all kinds of disposable products(一次性产品). They are expected to remove at least three tons of rubbish in large bags.

Team leader Robert Hoffman is making his fourth trip up the mountain. He says he hopes to bring Qomolangma to the condition it was in before the first successful climb fifty years ago. He says he hopes the effort will influence other people to clean up the environment closer home.

Disposable products on Qomolangma are a major concern. So the clean-up team will take along newly developed equipment to collect and treat disposable products. Over the years, the disposable products have

ar.26th, 2012 Dear Mr.Huang,

I’m Jack, a student in Class 2, Senior 3. I’m writing to tell you my opinions and expectation of the school canteen.

In general, we are satisfied with the clean and tidy dining hall, its delicious food and the good service from the smiling waiters who are always neatly dressed. However, what is not to our satisfaction is that the price of the meal is a little too high and that we can only have a limited variety of dishes to choose from. In addition, students often have to wait in line for about 30 minutes before getting their food. We would greatly

appreciate it if the problems mentioned above can be solved as soon as possible. Finally, I would like to suggest to you that the food should be heated in time to ensure the students’ health, especially in winter. Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

读写任务(25分)

Some Americans will spend two months cleaning up Qomolangma, which has been polluted by all kinds of rubbish, especially the disposable products. They hope their effort will urge other people to protect the environment. (34 words)

I live near a main river of our city which is spotted with rubbish of different colors. Seriously polluted, the river fails to provide us with a spectacular view, but occasionally sends out an unpleasant smell with the wind, especially in hot summer. I think the large population and the factories on both sides of the river are mainly responsible for the serious situation. When taking a walk along the river, people throw rubbish into the river and even drop waste from the tall buildings without any consideration of the environment. Waste water from the factories poses an even greater threat to the river.

To improve the situation, I, with my friends, have formed an organization named “Saving Our Home” which is aimed at raising people’s awareness of environmental protection. Our members are now engaged in circulating knowledge among people on how to make our living conditions better by recycling, cutting down on the use of disposable products and dealing with rubbish in correct ways. We do hope our efforts will make a difference to our environment.
