乔治独自一人住在伦敦南部的一套公寓里。他选择一个人生活，因为他感到无法忍受世人的无知和周围环境的丑陋。众所周知，今天的伦敦已不再是一个美丽的城市，气候也并不宜人。对于乔治来说，这个城市就像一个过于熟稔的老太婆，只有从适当的角度，他才能想起她当年的美貌，但最近他已经开始厌烦了。
他的生活很简朴，经济状况也还可以。他可以穿着睡袍，终日坐在古老而舒适的扶手椅里阅读文学名著。尽管他生性愤世嫉俗、悲观厌世，但却尤其喜欢阅读经典游记，所以，即便他坐在宽大、温暖的扶手椅里，也可以神游到天涯海角。
一天早上，他翻看着马塞尔·帕尼奥尔写的一本书。书中帕尼奥尔对法国南部普罗旺斯地区的描述已经打动了好几代人。普罗旺斯自然环境引人入胜，它背靠阿尔卑斯山低伏的山峦，面朝地中海湛蓝的海水，有着悠久的农耕和民间手工艺传统。在帕尼奥尔看来，普罗旺斯富有乡村特色，比较保守，当地人天生不信任陌生人。

但是，随着开车时间的临近，乔治也渐渐感到疲倦。部分原因是刚才那顿大餐，还有部分原因是他意识到这趟旅行也是很累人的。他感觉到，自己必须急急忙忙地穿过月台，寻找预订的座位，费力地在熙熙攘攘的旅客中穿行，然后坐在一个不舒服的座位上长达六个小时——至少远赶不上他自己家里的扶手椅舒服。
到站下车后，他还得找个宾馆，睡在陌生的床上，然后再四处寻找那些他在梦中已经熟悉的景色、声音和气味。真的有必要去趟普罗旺斯吗？在他的想象中，他不是已经去过了吗？如果他看到的实景和他想象的不一致，他至少一定会失望吧？那么，呆在伦敦的家里不是更简单、更安全吗？

民俗舞对决

第二天早上，我们坐在餐桌旁闲聊，希望我们中间有一人能睡了会儿。可没有一个人有这种好运气。
在大会的开幕式上，教育部来的那个官员花了30 分钟对与会的500 位英文教师大谈英语的重要性，教师的重要性，英语教师的重要性。有个人吼道：“那你们为什么不给我们涨工资？”于是立即被站在礼堂后面的两个壮汉“请”出去了。

客人们听到这个消息都很恼火，所以开车离开时动静都很大，这也是意料之中的事。半夜和凌晨两点的时候，还有警察过来，看市长的口谕是否得以执行，而连叫带嚷才正是正经履行公务的派头。
那天晚上晚些时候，当地政府准备了一场告别宴会，欢送所有与会来宾。宴会上表演的节目是传统的立陶宛民俗歌舞。但他们出了岔子，请了两家而不是一家歌舞团。这两家歌舞团不仅是竞争对手，还是冤家对头，谁也不肯让步。
于是，他们轮流表演，先是第一家唱首歌，然后第二家跳支舞，然后第一家跳舞，第二家唱歌，如此循环往复。第一家歌舞团表演的时候，第二家就坐在后台大声说话，狂挥乱舞。
两家民俗歌舞团对决的结果就是晚会比预期的时间要长一倍。没过多久，观众之中就有那么一两个人觉得简直活不下去了，于是他们俯下身子免得被看到，从舞台右边的大门溜了出去。当然，这一小撮人的举动引燃了大家反抗的情绪，于是，40、50、60 甚至更多的人都试图从那扇门溜出去。
我也决定跟着正在从观众席上撤退的人溜出去。但我还是感到有些奇怪，因为我记得右边的门外是个死胡同。结果我一出门就知道自己是正确的——根本没有出口。一百多人挤在这里，像被装进了一个大橱子。要纠正这个错误只能走回去，但每个人都觉得那样太尴尬了，每个人都尽力压低声音不笑出声来。
外面的音乐还是那么震耳，踢腿舞还是那么充满激情；突然间，那扇门猛地一下开了，数以百计的人跌了出来，狂奔而去，嘴里塞着手绢，免得笑出声来。两家歌舞团的演员和观众席上剩下的零星几位观众都惊得目瞪口呆。
第二天，我们驱车到了边境。会议取得了圆满成功。

Lashihai Watershed (拉市海流域) is a nature reserve in north-west Yunnan. It is an area of great beauty with lakes, forests and mountains. There are many things to see there, for example rare plants and many different species of birds.
