Steps (步骤) Methods & Tasks(方法、任务) 1. Changing and stressful situations. 2. Managing change. 3. Resistance to change 4. Tell the most stressful situation to you about change. 5. Learn the correct attitude towards change and learn how to manage it. 6. Know people’s reasons for resisting change and some situations in which change was handled well. Leading-in: Quotation: “There is nothing permanent except change.” Heraclitus of Ephesus. Greek philosopher Ask students whether they agree with Heraclitus and whether they think his statement represents a positive, negative or neutral view of the world. Starting up: This section gives students an opportunity to think about the theme of the unit and provides some speaking practice. Part A 1) Students work individually to choose the situations they find most stressful. 2) Working with the whole class, ask students for their responses and record them on the board as a class survey. Invite comments and encourage discussion. Part B 1) Point out that, unlike most stressful in Exercise A, most significant here doesn’t necessarily imply good or bad. 2) Start by telling the class the most significant change in your life and explain why it was so significant. 3) Invite individual students to do the same 4) Encourage class discussion of any particularly interesting, dramatic or amusing responses to the question. Part C Students decide on a situation individually, then discuss their choice and reasons for it with students who have chosen different answers. This could be in pairs or small groups. Introduction Step One Step Two 3

Reading: Managing change This section introduces the business leader Jack Welch and focuses on his thoughts about change. The exercises give practice in skimming for gist, summarizing and extracting information, and deal with vocabulary from the text. Part A Tell students they are going to read some of the things Jack Welch has said about change. To prepare for reading, write the words gradual, fundamental, and incremental on the board and ask students to explain what they mean in the context of change, perhaps b giving examples. Also check students are aware of the countable and uncountable meanings of bureaucracy. Part B Jack Welch’s attitude is that change is an opportunity. It can represent a challenge and it can also represent a danger, but it is essentially an opportunity. Part C 1 quotation 3 2 quotation 5 3 quotation 4 4 quotation 2 5 quotation 1 Part D Step Three DO Bring people into the change process. Start with reality. Get all the facts out. Give people the rationale for change. See change as an opportunity. Energize and invigorate others. Stimulate and relish change. Think in terms of fundamental change. Don’t See change as a threat Let bureaucracy beat you Be frightened or paralyzed by change Think in incremental terms. Part E Check the answers with whole class. Possible answers: 1 renewing itself, leaving the past behind, adapting to change 2 the change process 3 winning and losing, threat, opportunity 4 gradual change, transformation, gone through, big bold changes 4

5 energize, invigorate, stimulate 6 incremental terms, fundamental change Part F 1 rationale 2 threat 3 bold 4 relish Step Four Listening: Resistance to change This listening comes from an authentic interview with an independent management consultant, Jeremy Keeley. Exercises focus on listening for specific information, note-taking and vocabulary from the interview. Part A Students work in pairs to discuss the pre-listening question and make their list of reasons. Part 1 B Recording 11.1 1) Play the recording twice, with students taking notes. 2) students finalize their answers in pairs, then compare the reasons Jeremy Keeley gives with the ones they listed in Exercise A. 3) play the recording again if necessary. 4) Check the answers with the whole class. Uncertainty, fear, lack of trust, lack of control Part 2 C Recording 11.2 1) Ask students to look at the last three bullet points and invite suggestions about what kind of situation Jeremy Keeley is likely to talk about. 5

2) Students listen to the interview twice and make notes. 3) Check the answers with the whole class. Possible answers: Situation – client company, number of years ago, cost reductions and new marketing strategy necessary. Chief Executive – new to board, published new targets within three weeks, informed everyone Communication – Chief Executive’s message communicated clearly to all concerned widely from the beginning, face-to-face communications and weekly letter giving progress update. Difficult decisions- employee cuts Part D 1 significantly 2 volume 3 lead 4 vision 5 segment 6 margins Part E 1 to 1 Each prepare one or two situations to describe to discuss informally. These could be situations of current interest nationally and/or of a more personal nature. This will be useful for the 1 to 1 adaptation of language focus Exercise E. Homework Work in small groups.
