Florida is located in the southeastern corner of the United States. Florida is a peninsula. That means it is surrounded by water on three sides. The Atlantic Ocean is on the east. The Gulf of Mexico is on the west. At the bottom of Florida is a group of very small island called the Florida Keys. Key West, on the Florida Keys, is the most southern city in the United States. Florida is a low, flat state with many rivers, lakes and swamps(湿地). There are no mountains in Florida.
Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, but the largest city is Jacksonville. Much of the population of Florida lives in large cities on the coast, such as Miami and Tampa. The population of Florida is about 16 million and growing. In population, it is the fourth most populated state in the nation. Seventeen percent of the population is Hispanic(以西班牙语为母语的人) and fifteen percent of the population is African-American. The fastest growing population is senior citizens. Eighteen percent of the population, that is almost 2.8 million people, is 65years of age or older.
Many people move to Florida to enjoy the beautiful weather. Florida is called the Sunshine State. The weather in the summer is hot and humid, with an average (平均) temperature of 81 oF in July. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature is 60 oF. Florida has a lot of rain with an average rainfall of 54 inches.
Florida’s economy is strong. Many people work for resorts (旅游胜地), restaurants, banks, hotels, and stores. Florida’s farmers grow most of the nation’s oranges.
