Pennsylvania—When Connie Beck and her husband awoke to strange noises last weekend, they thought high winds were rattling (使……发出响声) their home.
What they found was even more unexpected: A deer was taking a bubble (泡沫) bath in their bathtub.
“I wasn’t exactly dressed for company,” Mrs. Beck said. “We were just waking up.” The deer burst through the front door early on Saturday, ran past the couple’s bedroom and into the bathroom.
Somehow he managed to turn on the water in the bathtub and knock over a bottle of bubble bath into the bathtub. He then got himself into the bubbly water. “You could hear the water running over the kicking,” Beck said.
The Becks called State Game Commission officials, who arrived with tranquilizers (镇静剂) and a lot of laughter.
“A guy said, ‘There’s nothing wrong… he’s just in there taking a bubble bath,’” Mrs. Beck said.
The animal was soon brought under control, removed from the house and released. “He was unharmed except for a little cut above the eye,” said Mrs. Beck. “We were also fortunate. We often hear the phrase: \It is used to describe something that hasn't got much chance of happening. However, the common saying undermines (掩盖) the very real dangers of lightning. Last Friday, at least 5 people were killed by lightning in Nepal. Lightning strikes are the second most common cause of deaths during natural disasters in the US. The first is floods. Around 400 people nationwide are struck by lightning each year, and of those 73 people die. That means more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes and hurricanes. Because lightning kills only one or two people at a time, its danger does not receive as much attention as other disasters.
So to raise awareness, the US has made June 22 to 28 National Lightning Safety
Week. It aims to warn the public of the dangers of lightning and provide safety tips during thunderstorms. \you hear thunder, you are in danger from lightning,\said Rocky Lopes, a disaster educator at the American Red Cross. \means that lightning is close enough to hit you at any minute, so you should move indoors immediately and stay there until after the storm has ended. The single most important thing to remember is to seek hiding place,\
Summer is the high time for lightning storms, so when lightning strikes across the sky, remember these safety tips:
Stop working, fishing, swimming or playing in open fields.
If you can count less than ten seconds between a thunder and a lightning flash, take cover inside the nearest building. Do not stand under a tree.
Get off bicycles or motorcycles.
Crouch down (蹲下) if there is no hiding place.
Avoid open spaces, wire fences, metal objects and electrical objects such as hair driers.
25. What's the popular opinion about being struck by lightning? A. It is impossible for people to be killed by lightning.
B. It is the most dangerous among all file natural disasters.
C. The chance for a person to be struck by lightning is very small.
D. There is a greater chance for being killed by lightning than any other natural disaster.
26. The average death rate of being struck by lightning in the US is about
A. 18% B. 50% C 30% D. 73% 27. What's the safety tip when you hear thunder outside? A. Take away the hair drier.
B. Quickly find a place to go inside.
C. Just stand by your bicycles and motorcycles.
D. Count ten seconds between a thunder and a lightning. 28. Which of the following statements is true?
A. There are on average 5 persons killed by lightening in Nepal each day.
B. The National Lightning Safety Week is made to warn the public of lightning.
C. The death rate of being struck by lightning is much higher than by other natural disasters.
D. There are more people killed by tornadoes and hurricanes than by lightning in the US each year.

Psychologist George Spilich and workmates at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to \deprived (被剥夺) of cigarettes through many tests.
In the first test, each subject sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a group of 96 letters. In this simple test, active smokers, deprived smokers and non-smokers performed equally well.
The next test was more complex, requiring all to look quickly at orders of 20 same letters and respond to the immediate one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the encouragement of nicotine, active smokers were faster than deprived smokers.
In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers.
The fourth test required people to read a passage, and then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers were not only likely to have poorer memories but also had trouble picking important information from unimportant details (细节).
\greatly better than smokers.\He predicts, \might perform well enough at many jobs until they got complex. A smoking airline pilot could fly well enough if no problems appeared, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity (容量).\
29. What's the purpose of George Spilicb's experiment?
A. To show how smoking damages people's mental capacity. B. To prove that smoking affects people's regular performance. C. To find out whether smoking helps people's short-term memory.
D. To test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokers. 30. George Spilich's experiment was conducted in such a way as to A. check the effectiveness of nicotine on smokers B. register the immediate responses of the subjects C. put the subjects through increasingly complex tests
D. force the subjects to pick major information from details
31. The underlined word \
A. lost B. beat C. hated D. caught 32. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that_________. A. no airline pilots smoke during flights
B. smoking in urgent cases causes mental illness
C. smokers should not expect to become airline pilots D. smokers may prove unable to deal with urgent cases
D
Beijing West Railway Station is the biggest railway station I have ever seen. I once joked, \will never know how many people there are in China unless you go to Beijing West Railway Station.\
I usually bought hard-berth (硬卧) tickets when I traveled by train in China. The first thing I noticed was that Chinese berths were much smaller than those in other countries. Though I had to crouch (蜷缩) on the berth, I could still manage to sleep on it, as I'm not that tall.
China's trains are operated efficiently. The work is done well among the
attendants (乘务员) and trains leave on time. The friendly nature of the Chinese passengers turns a trip on the train into a big family gathering, and they often share their food with other passengers. Foreigners, on the other hand, will say \other, but rarely go further than that. On Chinese trains, I often saw such a funny thing: old couples would argue about where they should put their luggage; young people would begin to play with their mobile phones as soon as they settled in their seats.
I like traveling by train in China because it is cheap, safe and comfortable. In India and Spain, people are always knocking off the metal parts of the train to sell them for money. Bit by bit, the train is destroyed. That's why there are signs on the train, warning \stealing the train!\There are signs on Dutch and French trains which read \Sticking\to stop people from sticking pictures on the trains. On the other hand, on Chinese trains you can find signs like this: \33. What did Beijing West Railway Station remind the writer of? A. The large population of China.
B. The biggest railway station in the world. C. The good management of Chinese trains.
D. The smaller hard-berths compared with other countries.
34. Which of the following statements is true according to the writer's opinion? A. It's a pity that trains in India are often stolen.
B. Young people pay more attention to their luggage. C. Chinese passengers are friendlier than foreigners.
D. Dutch and French trains are more special with pictures stuck on them. 35 Which of the following might be the best title of this passage? A. Experiencing China by Traveling on Trains. B. A Foreigner's View on Chinese Trains. C. Different Train Systems in the World.
D. A Foreigner's Impression on Traveling in China

Recently, recycling textbooks has been put into practice in some provinces in China. As far as I am concerned, it is a good way which will benefit both society and us students.
For one thing, it is good news to students from poor families who can't afford textbooks. For another, recycling textbooks can save natural resources. We are cutting down too many trees every day. In the long run, it helps develop the students' environmental awareness. What's more, students may learn to share and work with others through recycling textbooks.
To sum up, I consider recycling textbooks useful and helpful. And 1 still hope students don't damage their textbooks and keep them clean for the benefit of the next students to use them.
