Passage3

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. It is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between ―fight‖ or ―flight‖ and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives, we need find ways to deal with it.

A) depends very much on the response B) changes with the time stress lasts C) varies from person to person D) can be removed if you try

4. The extreme crises people met in more primitive days are the choices between . A) life and death B) fight and flight C) chemical reaction and physical reaction D) short-term reaction and long-term reaction

5. What can be inferred from the passage about stress?

A) Stress is something we should try get rid of by every means B) Only intelligent people can deal with large amounts of stress.

C) Stress is indispensable as people are kept too busy with their routines. D) Stress in life cannot be removed, but should be handled appropriately.

Passage 4

The way in which memory works is not known. Some psychologists think that there is physical change in the brain cells or nerves when learning takes place.

Psychologists are also unable to say what makes people forget. Some things are forgotten quickly while others are always remembered. Sometimes a person seems to have forgotten certain material completely, yet is able to relearn the material more quickly than when he or she first learned it. In trying to understand memory, psychologists have done a lot of experiments.

Psychologists have found that the conditions under which something is learned have an effect on how well it is remembered. When a great deal of material is to be learned, for example, to learn one thing at a time is better than to learn many things at the same time. A person then learns more quickly and remembers better.

Learning two similar things one after another seems to have a bad effect on memory. When a person memorizes two sets of historical dates, one after the other, for example, he or she may mix up the two – the learning of the new material prevents the remembering of the material already learned.

Most forgetting takes place in the first day or so after learning. After that, forgetting happens more slowly. Material that is understood – such as ideas or riddles – is not so easily forgotten. Very little forgetting takes place in time if an idea is well understood. The more meaningful the learned material is, the better it will be remembered. 1. The way remembering or forgetting happens_______.

A ) is not clearly known to people B) is clearly known only to psychologists C ) varies from person to person D) is not given much investigation 2. What psychologists are certain of is that________.

A) remembering and forgetting are not too different from each other B) the way we learn affects how much we remember

C) the more people learn, the better they can remember

D) remembering and forgetting are too mysterious to be understood

3. According to the passage, two similar things that are learnt at the same time__________. A) are easier to remember B) are more difficult to remember C) cannot be remembered D) cannot be mixed up to learn

4. In order to better remember the learned material, you should _____________. A) have a quick glance at the material B) skim the material for the main idea C) scan the material for the detailed facts D) understand the material thoroughly 5. The passage is mainly concerned with_______________.

A) ways to improve memory B) ways to prevent forgetting C) remembering and forgetting D) experiments on memory

Passage 5

Many private institutions of higher education around the country are in danger. Not all will be saved, and perhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quality schools just as there are low-quality businesses. We have no obligation to save them simply because they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. They are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial difficulty, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenues (收入) significantly. Raising fees doesn't bring in more revenue, for each time fees go up, the enrollment goes down, or the amount that must be given away in student aid goes up. Schools are bad businesses, whether public or private. Not usually because of bad management but because of the nature of the business. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either from too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad business。

It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private, are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are bound to be better than public schools. There are plentiful examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state universities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity. Diversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout the nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is the positive goods. Eager supporters of public higher education know the importance of keeping private higher education healthy. 1. In the passage, the author asks the public to support _____. A. private higher education in general B. public higher education in general

C. high-quality private universities and colleges D. high-quality state universities and colleges

2. According to the passage, schools are bad businesses because of____.

A. the nature of school B. poor teachers C. bad management D. too few students 3. The phrase ―go under‖ in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to ____. A. have low fees B. get into difficulties

C. do a bad job educationally D. have low teaching standards 4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. There are many cases indicating that private schools are superior to public schools. B. The author thinks diversity of education is preferable to uniformity of education. C. A high-quality university is always a good business. D. Each time fees are raised, the enrollment goes up.

5. In the author's opinion, the way that can save private schools lies in ____.
