My husband Desmond was once a financial(金融的) planner. Even though he couldn’t balance our budget(预算), his clients trusted him completely and he made them feel secure. In exchange they paid him very well. We had a nice life then. At that time, my yoga studio (瑜伽馆) was just starting to make a profit, and I had recently decorated it. At last, I was in control of my working life and poured my heart and soul into making it succeed.

When we first met, I fell hard for Desmond right away, although I wouldn’t call it love I’d never been with a man who was smarter than I was, but after a while I got used to this, and it didn’t bother me so much. I was recovering from a broken heart and needed something to help me move on. If it wasn’t love, it was good enough, and when he asked me to marry him I jumped at the chance, knowing that it might be my last.

Things started out so well. I was working steadily and Desmond was patiently climbing up the ladder in his department. Then, without any warning, one gray winter afternoon in year five, he left his desk at the bank, handed in his resignation, and came home and told me he wanted to start an interior design business.

He has always loved mixing and matching, and has a real eye for color, texture, and shape, but the idea of turning a hobby into a business wasn’t something we had ever discussed. I thought the stress of his job was becoming too much and perhaps he would take a few months off over the spring and summer to relax and get the idea out of his system. I didn’t believe he could be serious. But once he had a few clients, he began to draw up plans, ordering catalogues and turning our empty workshop into a kind of makeshift (权宜之计)studio with all of his sketches(草图) pinned to the wall. After spending a lot of time and money on all of this preparation, and really doing quite a nice job of it, he called each client in turn and apologized, saying he wouldn’t be able to design their living spaces after all.

When it comes to success in business and success in life, there are few qualities (素质,素养)as important as confidence.

People naturally have different levels of confidence. Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self-confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists (心理学家)and other professionals(专业人员).

One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do?

Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors, will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do.

Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing (裁员). After all, if you are a recognized expert in the office, you will be regarded as

2

an indispensable member of the team.

Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence.

Teenagers are often a difficult group. With all those hormones (荷尔蒙) flooding their bodies, they can be moody, unpredictable, and tend to make uncertain choices. But however confusing their teenage years are, kids can still be generally happy, depending on their lifestyle choices. According to a new research by British scientists, teens who don’t smoke, drink only moderately

4

or not at all, and who don’t eat much junk food are likely to be happier than other teens.

The study looked at 40,000 British families and came up with some interesting findings. For example, kids who never drank alcohol were up to six times more likely to report higher levels of happiness than kids who drank. And teens who smoked were five times less likely to rate high on happiness charts compared to kids who don’t smoke. Same goes for diet and physical activity. The more fruits and vegetables kids eat, and the more hours they spend playing sports, the happier they are.

Now, of course this doesn’t mean that not smoking or drinking, and playing sports guarantees happiness. It could be that kids who have happy character tend to be more active and less addicted to drinking or smoking. And it could equally be the case that kids who are unhappy are more related to drinking and smoking and eating junk food.

Other studies have shown that exercise is a proven way to treat anxiety and depression. Future studies may support the idea that other healthful behavior, including refraining (克制) from smoking, drinking, and eating too much junk, can avoid sadness and increase happiness, too.

32.The author developed the second paragraph mainly by ________. A.making comparisons B.providing statistics C.offering examples D.analyzing causes 33.What can we learn from the text?

A.Not smoking or drinking guarantees happiness. B.Teens with flooding hormones can not be happy. C.Playing sports can decrease teen’s unhappiness. D.Unhappiness can certainly lead to smoking and drinking. 34.Which of the following might help teens quit anxiety? A.Smoking and drinking. B.Taking exercise. C.Eating junk food. D.Going on a diet. 35.Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Ways to treat anxiety and depression B.Exercise and teenagers’ health C.Teenagers shouldn’t drink or smoke D.Teenagers’ lifestyle and their happiness 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
