This picture presents two contrasting types of teacher images. One believes that a teacher is a candle which consumes itself to light the way for others, whereas the other claims giving light to others may not be at the expense of oneself.
Personally, I agree with the candle metaphor. First, teaching is not stuffing the students with facts. Teaching is inspiring. A teacher gives all his knowledge, time and energy to students, encouraging them to make progress. Besides, a teacher is a model for students to follow. What the teacher is is more important than what he teaches. The candle image of the teacher is more likely to inspire students to seek truth and knowledge rather than pursue material gains. Finally, if a teacher is over involved in social activities, he has little time to prepare his teaching. All in all, a teacher’s mission is to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s world. The traditional type of teacher can better fulfill this role.
