In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and to concentrate on my courses. I was quickly labeled a “brain.” I did so well that by the end of senior year I had perfect grades and enough college credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework. But in early June of senior year, the principal called me into office. He asked me to give a speech at gradation. I gaped(目瞪口呆地凝视)at him, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work? I mumbled something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have broken up my perfect record. I finally agreed to a compromise. I would share the honor with five other students. I agreed to introduce my friend Judy, who would then give her own, full-length speech. Graduation day soon arrived. I’d been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur, and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the podium without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. But within seconds, I was done and heading back to my seat. I accomplished something I’d never dreamed of—I spoke in front of hundreds of people. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to participate in class at college, to give verbal reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation-or ever. But I’m glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I’m faced with the prospect of doing something I dread. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments. 24. Why was the writer called a “brain”? A. She was a bookworm all the time B. She was the head of her small group C. She was the most intelligent student D. She did more coursework for good grades. 25. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. She ruined her health by studying hard B. She got the reward beyond expectation C. She was grateful for giving a speech D. She wasn’t good at physics at school 26. How did the author feel at the beginning of the graduation speech? A. Scared B. Moved C. Excited D. Embarrassed 27. What did the speech bring to the author at last? A. She had nothing to fear in life B. She got rid of her sense of shyness C. She won enough college credits D. She desired to become a speaker

Electronic devices can seem like a “third party\e time on them than with each other.

electronics have been sabotaging(破坏) their romantic relationships. A study, published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture in April 2017, questioned nearly 200 college aged adults who were in committed relationships to report on their and their partner’s smartphone dependency. The results showed people who were more dependent on their phones were less sure about their relationships, and people who considered their partners excessively (过度地) dependent on their devices were less satisfied in their relationship. China is embracing an era of sharing economy. After sharing bikes, sharing books are the next trend. The book-sharing program at Sanxiaokou Xinhua Bookstore in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, has been running for several months since its launch on July 16, 2017. Customers are encouraged to borrow up to two books, from all books available in this store, for free via an app, pay 99 yuan online as the deposit and return the books within 10 days. A survey of 601 app users conducted by the company in late July found that more than 90 percent of the readers said they may want to keep some of the borrowed books permanently, but they don't want to visit the store again to complete the purchase. When another nine stores joined the book-sharing program in August, the ability to purchase the borrowed books was made available on the app. Zhao Shiping, a manager of the Sanxiaokou store, said that the daily customer flow in the first week of the book-sharing program was about 7,000 while the figure for the same period last year was 5,000 to 6,000. So, book-sharing will reduce barriers for book purchasing and increase customer flow, which will increase the business value of the bookstore, its brand value and increase its value as a partner for companies outside the book sales sector. In addition to bookstores, banks have also joined the trend of book-sharing. Two branches of China Everbright Bank introduced book loan service at the end of this July. The service is free for seven days and 0.1 yuan is charged

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Bamboo is one of the world’s most useful plants. For thousands of years, bamboo has been used in many different ways.

However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world. It is not made according to officially set measurements, or standards. It simply grows in the ground. Professor Kent Harries at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is trying to change that. 36 They are testing its radial load, or how much pressure or weight it can take before breaking.

Building codes everywhere require strict standardization of tests for all materials, such as timber or concrete. But tests for bamboo have not been standardized. 37 They need to be standardized. Standardizing test methods for bamboo will help to bring the plant into common use, or the mainstream. It will also give engineers and builders a dependable standard---or as Harries says, a testing method they can hang their hat on.

Harries sees bamboo as a great building material. 38 Besides its strength, Harries says that bamboo has other features that make it a great building material. He says it is resilient, meaning it keeps its shape and strength even under pressure. What’s more, bamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo needs much less time to grow than wood. Harries says bamboo poles could be joined together into columns for building floors and roofs. 39 It is also used for furniture or man-made building products such as flooring and window covers, or blinds.

However, for building, bamboo is not used much outside its native growing area. This is mostly because of its round shape. But there are other reasons too. 40 People think or have the mentality that bamboo is a low quality building material for poor people, and people need to try to get it over, according to Professor Kent Harries. A. In many countries they are already used for wall panel structures. B. The professor and his students are testing the strength of bamboo.

C. First, it is strong, and the strength of at least three species of bamboo is similar to steel. D. Why is bamboo a great building material? E. Bamboo, it seems, has an image problem.
