Passage I: Maintaining a Sharp Eye
Passage 1 How Americans Address People
Step 1.Lead-in (In this step, some related information will be provided for the students.)
How do people address others Informal Titles in English
Casual or very close relationships require an informal form of address: 当两人是非正式或非常亲密的关系时,就需要用到非正式称呼: First name (friends, students, children) 名(用于称呼朋友,学生,孩子)
Miss/Mr + first name (sometimes used by dance or music teachers or childcare
workers)
Miss/Mr + 名(舞蹈老师、音乐老师或者托儿工作者有时会用) Titles of Affection
When addressing a child, a romantic partner, or a close friend or family member
(usually younger) people often use these terms of endearment, also known as \
?Honey (child, romantic partner, or younger person) (用于叫孩子、伴侣或者比
自己年轻的人)/Dear/Sweetie/Love/Darling/Babe or Baby (romantic partner) (用于叫伴侣)/Pal (father or grandfather calls male child) (父亲或祖父用来称呼男孩)/Buddy or Bud (very informal between friends or adult-to-child; can be seen
as negative)(朋友之间或者长辈对孩子的称呼,非常随意,可被认作有反面含义) 补充:
Occasionally you may have a close relationship with someone who typically gets
called Sir, Madam, Mr or Mrs (for example, a business executive, a celebrity, a professor or a person older than yourself). At some point this person may give you permission to use his or her first name. In English we use the phrase \first name basis\formal as it seems it should be. To describe this you would say, for example: \name terms.\
Step 2. Comprehension Questions (The students will be asked some compression questions after they have skimmed the passage to help them develop reading strategies.)
① How do Americans address people formally? ② How do Americans prefer to address people?
③ What do they mean when your friends address you with your family name?
Step 3. Explain the passage in detail
(1) Explanation of Difficult Sentences
①(Title) How Americans Address People Translation: 美国人是如何称呼别人的
②(Para. 1) Do you know how Americans address people? Analysis: How-clause is a objective clause. Translation: 你知道美国人是如何称呼别人的吗? Example: a. I want to make sure that John is not late. b. I think Jack will be late.
③ (Para 2) They find these words too formal. Analysis: link verb+ adj.
Translation: 他们认为这些单词太正式了。 Example: I find Jane very beautiful in this dress.
(2) Useful Words and Expressions Address:称呼
I heard him address her as darling.
Teachers should be addressed as “Mr. …” or “Sir”. Americans don’t like to address people with family name. Form—formal—formally—informally 形式—正式的—正式地—非正式地
You should use Mr. Mrs. or Miss on formal occasions.
Like to do短暂的、暂时性的做某事 I like to swim with you today. Like doing长期的、习惯性的 I like swimming.
They find these words too formal. 宾补结构 主语 + 宾补动词 + 宾语 + 宾语补语 She makes her mother angry.
The teacher asked me to read the passage. There +be结构
There lies a book on the desk.
宾补结构,如果把宾语理解为主语的话,那么后面这个补语成分,就是表语了。宾语和宾补之间有逻辑主谓关系。 对比:
主语 + 双宾动词 + 间接宾语 + 直接宾语 She gave John a book. She bought a book for me.
双宾语就是2个宾语(只有名词结构可以做宾语)。2个宾语是等价关系,之间没有明显的修饰关系。
Step 4. Practice
Ask the students to read the passage.
Ask the students to translate the passage one sentence by one.
