I wonder how many Hong Kong students realize that our standards are falling these days, especially in English. From my point of view, the idea of teaching smaller classes should be considered.

Instead of talking about the advantages of teaching smaller classes, let me talk about the problem of having a large number of students in one class. Firstly, I don't think teachers can look after so many students all at the same time. Thus, the educational standard of the students will fall. Also, it is possible that teachers are not able to give enough attention to each of the students. With so many students in class, the teachers are sometimes not clear about the different standards of different students. As a result, teachers sometimes do not understand where their students are weak and are unable to give them any special care. I'm sure you now know the reason why Hong Kong students' standards are falling. Thus, we must take action to improve the situation and overcome (克服) this problem. And the solution(解决方法) above is a great idea. In smaller classes, students can have more chances to ask questions, as teachers have much more time when they are teaching just a small group of students. What is more, as there are fewer students than before, teachers can take better care of each student. Therefore, when students get into difficulties, they can get immediate help in class. All in all, we still don't know what the results of teaching smaller classes will be. However, I think this policy(政策)can help raise students' standards. So I strongly agree with it. 57. What does the writer suggest to improve the falling study standards in Hong Kong? A. Better teaching. B. A change of teachers, C. Teaching smaller classes. D. Giving students more classes. 58. The writer talks about big classes in the second paragraph to ________. A. Attract readers' attention to them

B. explain his idea from the opposite point of view C.give some examples about the main topic D. tell people about the bad conditions in big classes 59. According to the passage, the students in smaller classes can ________. A. ask any question in class B. solve problems all by themselves C. study in small groups D.get more help from teachers

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.

The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville.

Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in–depth!

But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).

64. How did the author find his friend a book liar?

A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself.

65. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?

A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list. B. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C. The author admitted having read 9 books. D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.

66. By lying about reading, a person hopes to . A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable C. learn about the book D. make more friends

64.【答案】D

【解析】根据文章第一段A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was ,in his words, “a brilliant written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all.

George

Orwell’s 1984。

As we know, it is not easy to build a satellite(卫星). Building a traditional satellite usually takes years. The costs can be as high as $250 million or more. Most members of the design teams have worked in the field for a long time. They hold advanced degrees(学历) in math, science, or engineering.

But things are changing. High costs, unusual educational needs and long start-up times are no longer an obstacle(障碍) to space exploration. The scientists have developed a new type of tiny, inexpensive earth-orbiting(轨道) satellite. So far, college students have built and launched(发射) several cube-shaped satellites, or CubeSats. At least 15 more are ready to go. Those already in orbit take pictures, collect information and send it back to the earth, just as regular satellites do.
