Friendship Lasts Forever
Twenty-one years ago, my husband gave me Sam, an-eight-week-old dog. Sam and I developed a very special friendship over the next fourteen years. It seemed nothing that happened could 31 change that.
When my husband and I moved from our New York apartment to a new home in New Jersey, our neighbor, whose cat had recently had kittens, asked us 32 we would like one. We were a little worried about Sam’s jealousy(嫉妒) and how he would handle his field being broken into, but we decided to 33 it and agreed to take a kitten.
We picked a little, gray, playful ball of fur. She raced around running after imaginary mice and squirrels and jumped over from table to chair very quickly, so we

Then, without my warning, Sam began suffering from convulsions(痉挛) and was diagnosed as having a weak heart. I had no other choice but to have him put down. The pain of making that decision, however, was nothing compared with what I 39 when I had to leave Sam at the vet and walk into our house alone.
In the days that followed, Lightning seemed heart-broken. She could not tell me in words that she was suffering, but I could see the pain and disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door, or the 40 whenever she heard a dog bark.
The weeks wore on and the cat’s sadness seemed to be lifting. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to take a look on the floor next to our sofa where we had a statue (雕像) of Sam we had bought a few years before. Lying next to the statue, one arm wrapped around the statue’s neck, was Lightning, happily sleeping with her best friend. 31. A. even B. just C. ever D. never 32. A. if B. where C. when D. though 33. Do you know what a steeplejack is?First you have to know what a steeple is. A steeple is a tower on a church. A steeplejack is someone who repairs steeples. Steeplejacks may also do painting or cleaning.
There is a family of steeplejacks. They travel around the country finding work as they go. They carry a notebook showing the steeples they have repaired. Mainly on churches, sometimes they also work on courthouses (法院) and other buildings with towers.
Many of these buildings are old and in need of careful repair. The steeplejacks climb up to look. Often they work with engineers and other experts to decide what to do. Then the family goes to work. Some jobs take a few weeks. Other jobs take months.
Many steeples have lovely clocks on them. Sometimes the golden numbers on the clocks have worn out. The steeplejacks replace the worn-out numbers and cover them with thin pieces of gold. Then the clock numbers shine just as they did in the past.
Some steeples have weather vanes(气象风向标) on top that need repair. Sometimes the roof of a steeple is worn out. The steeplejacks repair the roofs too. If a steeple is made of metal, then parts of it may have rusted(生锈). The steeplejacks replace these parts. If a steeple is made of wood, it may need to be painted. Sometimes steeplejacks paint the inside of a steeple too.
Steeplejacks work in high places and do a lot of climbing. They have to be careful. They don’t work in the rain, and they stay home on windy days. 45. Steeplejacks do the following work EXCEPT . A. repairing steeples B. doing painting C. doing cleaning D. building towers

Can dogs see colors? Man’s best friend is color-blind, but, luckily, his survival does not depend on the ability to see colors. His good sense of smell compensates for his inability to see colors, and enables him to tell the difference between things.
A lot of scientific testing on dogs supports the conclusion that they live in a colorless world. The testing done primarily centered on the dogs’ reactions to colors for food. Dogs can not tell the difference between one color, a signal for food, and other colors that were not for food. Similar tests that were carried out on cats produced similar results, which led scientists to conclude that they, too, are color-blind and live in a gray world.
The inability of most animals to see colors, from an evolutional(进化的) point of view, is quite simple to understand. Many color-blind animals have dull-colored coats, hunt for food in the dark night, or eat growing grass in the darkish twilight(黄昏的) hours. Their other senses have developed to the point where being short of color vision(色觉) in no way weakens them. For them, life in a colorless world is anything but a danger to their survival.
The only animals, other than man, which scientists can say have color vision are monkeys and apes. Both can be trained to open a colored door, behind which is food, and man can be trained to open a refrigerator door of any color!
48. The underlined phrase “compensates for” probably means . A. is different from B. makes up for C. depends on D. gives into 49. Scientists found that dogs and cats are color-blind according to . A. what food they plan to eat B. their good sense of smell C. an evolutionary point of view D. their reactions to colors for food 50. Dogs’ inability to see certain colors results from . A. their feeding habit B. their dull-colored coats C. their food kinds D. environmental change 51. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Monkeys cannot tell colors without training. B. Most animals hunt in the darkish twilight hours.
C. Further study is needed to prove dogs are color-blind. D. Dogs can do without the sense of color for many years.
D
Researchers have found more examples that suggest a relationship between races (种族) and the possibility of lung cancer(肺癌)among smokers. A new study shows that black people and Native Hawaiians are more likely to develop lung cancer from smoking. It compared their risk to whites, Japanese-Americans and Latinos. The study, however, found almost no racial differences among the heaviest
smokers. These were people who smoked more than thirty cigarettes each day.
Other comparisons have shown that blacks are more likely than whites to get lung cancer from smoking. But the scientists say few studies have compared the risks among Native Hawaiians, Asians and Latinos.
Researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of Hawaii did the new study. The New England Journal of Medicine published the findings. The eight-year research studied more than 180,000 people. They provided details about their tobacco(烟草) use and their food as well as other information. They included people who smoke at present, the ones who used to smoke and the ones who never smoked. Almost 2,000 people in the study developed lung cancer.
Researchers say genetics (遗传学) might help explain the racial and ethnic differences. There could be differences in how people’s bodies react (反应) to smoke. But environmental influences, including the way people smoke, could also make a difference.
African-Americans and Latinos in the study are reported to smoke the fewest cigarettes per day. Whites are the heaviest smokers. But the scientists point out that blacks have been reported to breathe cigarette smoke more deeply than white smokers. This could fill their lungs with more of the chemicals in tobacco that cause cancer. Many researchers disagree not only about the effect of races on the risks of disease, but evenabout the meaning of races. Yet scientists know that some diseases affect different groups differently. And some drug companies have begun to develop racially targeted (针对) medicines.
Last June, the United States Food and Drug Administration officially agreed to a drug designed to treat heart failure in black patients. The name is BiDil. The agency called it “a step toward the promise of personalized medicine”.
52. Which is the right order from a higher risk to a lower risk of having lung cancer? A. Whites—Native Hawaiians. B. African-Americans—Latinos. C. Asians—Native Hawaiians. D. African-Americans—Hawaiians. 53. According to the study, what may decide black people’s risk of lung cancer? A. The bigger amount of smoking than whites. B. The living style or habit of blacks to form. C. The depth of cigarette smoke into their lungs. D. The physical strength to react to cigarette smoke.
54. The production of BiDil is mentioned in the last paragraph to . A. explain different races react to some diseases differently B. tell the readers that racial differences exist in smokers C. show a big step people have taken in the medicine area D. support the idea that it is easy for blacks to have cancers 55. Which of the following is true according to the writer?
A. The way of smoking may increase the risk of having lung cancer. B. Races have nothing to do with the risk of having lung cancer.
C. The research was started by The New England Journal of Medicine. D. The risk of having lung cancer depends on how much a person smokes.
