Although global temperature rises show small changes at the bottom of the oceans, the resulting effects on fish body size are very large. As ocean temperatures increase, so do the body temperatures of the fish. This means they use more air to stay alive and they have less for growth.

The scientists have found that up to 2050, fish will grow short in size by between 14 and 24 percent, and the Atlantic Ocean is the worst place. The warming waters are also likely to drive some fish towards the poles, leading to smaller species living in areas like the North Sea.

According to the scientists, the temperature has a long effect on the fish. When they looked at case studies about North Atlantic fish, they find that body size of these fish showed greater decreases than expected.

第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

When I was young, Mom was often sick and Dad didn't make much money. We seldom went anywhere special except at those times that some generous adults stepped in to brighten our horizons.

One of my favorite memories of my early years was when I was a second grader. My teacher, also my best friend’s aunt, took us two girls to a neighboring city for a day. While in the city that day, I remember seeing a beautiful show of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer books. I longed for the book. Of course, I couldn't buy one—I only had a little pocket change. That day we rode an elevator and were taken to see a Disney movie after eating in a restaurant—it was a truly unforgettable day.

Another time my aunt, a dry old woman who went out about as seldom as our family did, took me to the movie. I can't remember the movie’s name but I do remember it was a unique experience to see a long movie on such a wide screen.

Other times, relatives took me to attend a carnival (狂欢节) or I was invited to a neighbor’s home to watch some musical program when TVs were not situated in every living room.

Had it not been for all those kind people allowing me to participate in their lives, I would have grown up completely ignorant(无知)of the world outside our little house and country school. Today, most children enjoy a variety of experiences. In our time it was different. It was only through the kindness of others that I was able to share in experiences I would otherwise never have had.

21.Why did the author seldom go anywhere when she was young? A.It was not safe for the girls to go out. B.The transportation was not convenient. C.Her family couldn't pay for her travel.

D.Her parents were afraid that she would get lost.

22.Who has ever taken the author to watch the books on show? A.Her aunt. B.A teacher. C.A neighbor. D.Her parents.

23.What can we learn from the passage?

A.The author’s aunt often took her to see a movie.

B.The author bought her favorite book with the pocket change. C.The author was excited to see a movie on a wide screen. D.The author went to watch a Disney movie on a bike.

24.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the last passage? A.Most children today enjoy their life at home. B.The life in the past is poor and terrible.

4

On June 26,2000, two scientists, called Francis Collins and Craig Venter, told the world that they could now read the whole “map” of the human body:DNA. DNA is something that everyone has, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our mother and father, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.

People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Gregor Mendel discovered a special reason why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things named “genes” in our body. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick made another discovery and found out that those small parts are real messages written in the DNA with a special language.

In 1961, Marshall Nirenberg and Johnson Matthaei found a message in DNA showing how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. Scientists now have found all the words in the DNA map, but we still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help save more people from several illnesses.

Most people hope that this will help make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry that when people begin to know more words and find out lots of other information, they might use it in a wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people from getting jobs. Man would have to meet a lot of trouble if DNA technic wasn't limited in use.

25.When did we first know why we look like other people in our family? A.In 1860. B.In 1953. C.In 1961. D.In 2000.

26.What does the underlined word “genes” mean? A.The “map” of DNA. B.A special language. C.Small parts of DNA. D.DNA.

27.What can we do if we understand some “words” of the language inside the body? A.Make people get new jobs. B.Make medicine for illnesses. C.Make maps of human.

D.Make people less attractive.

28.What do people think about this work? A.It can cause good or bad results. B.It can cause only good results.

C.It can cause good results but won't work. D.It can cause only bad results. 答案:
