Instructions for Applicants
Eligibility
To be admitted to the Master of Economics Programme at The University of Hong Kong, students generally need to hold a first degree.
Degrees are accepted from all recognized universities in Hong Kong and abroad. Professional qualifications may also be accepted as equivalent to a first degree.
Application
The Admissions Committee requests that the application form be typed preferably. Additional sheets may be added as necessary. Be sure to sign the application on pages 7 and 8. Separate the eight-page application form and staple the pages together. Soft copy of the application form can be downloaded at http://www.hku.hk/rss/pp2008 or http://www.fbe.hku.hk/mecon. Application can be submitted via taught postgraduate on-line system at http://www.hku.hk/rss/online.
Application Fee
The application fee is HK$300 (non-refundable).
Methods of Payment:
(a) Local applicants residing in Hong Kong
should pay the appropriate amount of application fee to The University of Hong Kong account by either
(i) using ATM:
- by “Bill Payment” function at ATMs of the HSBC/HangSang or JETCO bank groups with “Bill Payment Service” or “JET payment Service” logo respectively
- Select “Bill Payment” → “Education”→ “The University of Hong Kong”
- Enter Bill Type “06” Other Fees - Enter Bill account number:
For HSBC/Hang Seng Bank: 20999999834001
For JETCO: 2099999983000004001

- Enter payment HK$300
(Please do not use the “Account Transfer” function for payment.)
(ii) using HSBC Cheque Deposit Machine
(CQM):
- Make a crossed cheque payable to “The University of Hong Kong”;
- Deposit the cheque at any HSBC’s CQM by entering the University of Hong Kong’s bank account number: 002-222834-002 and the cheque amount of HK$300; and select “Reference” option and entering the reference number: 20999999834001
- Insert the cheque into the cheque insertion slot (please refer to the instructions listed on the machine)
(b) Overseas applicants should pay by Hong
Kong dollar bank drafts (HK$300) or US dollar bank drafts (USD40) and made payable to “The University of Hong Kong”. Personal cheque in foreign currency will NOT be accepted.
(c) Applicants who wish to apply via the taught
postgraduate on-line application system are required to pay the fee by credit card on-line.
If you are using the payment methods as mentioned in (a) above, it is essential that the original ATM transaction/cheque deposit advice must be stapled together with your application(s). You are also reminded to retain a photocopy of the transaction/deposit advice as your proof of payment of the application fee.
Tests
Although the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is not a compulsory requirement for admission, applicants with good GMAT or GRE scores may have an advantage. The HKU GRE code number is 2482 and the code number for GMAT is FS2-WL-65.
An applicant who wishes to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a score of 550 or above in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL or a score of 80 in the internet-based TOEFL. In exceptional circumstances he/she may be exempted from this requirement. Test scores more than two years old will not be accepted.
When you pre-register to take the test, you should request that the official test scores be sent to The University of Hong Kong. The HKU TOEFL code number is 9671.
References
The confidential reference forms and self-addressed envelopes should be given to two individuals capable of commenting on your academic and/or administrative capabilities. The envelopes, with seals unbroken and signatures of the referees intact, are to be sent to the HKU Academic Services Enquiry Office with your application materials.
Transcripts
An official transcript should be requested from every college or university you have attended. Photocopies of the transcript request form may be used to request transcripts from additional institutions. The official transcript with the transcript request form should be sent directly by the registrar of the institutions to the HKU Academic Services Enquiry Office.

Acknowledgement
The Master of Economics Programme Office is unable to send out acknowledgement of receipt to you until your completed application is transferred to it from the Academic Services Enquiry Office of the University. So please be patient. Fees
The programme fee will be payable in 2 instalments over 1 year for full-time study or 4 instalments over 2 years for part-time study.
The fee for the academic year 2008/2009 shall be HK$84,000, subject to final approval of the University. Additional course will cost HK$10,000 each.
The fees are subject to final approval of the University.
