Ancient Egyptians loved life. They were so in love with life that they felt it must continue after death. This is why Egyptians were often buried with many possessions. Egyptians also thought that the dead wouldn’t be able to enjoy the afterlife if their bodies were horribly decayed. For this reason, they began the process of preserving their dead through mummification.
Egypt has natural advantages when it comes to preserving dead bodies. It’s very dry and sandy, with almost no rainfall. Experts think that Egyptians got the idea for
mummification after finding perfectly preserved bodies buried in the sand. It is thought that deliberate mummification began about forty-five hundred years ago.
The mummification process was a long and careful one, as it also involved
preserving the spirit of the dead person. The first step was to remove all internal organs except the heart. The heart had to stay because the Egyptians believed it was the center of a person’s intelligence and spirit. The other organs were placed in large jars and buried

with the body.
In the next stage, the body was completely dried. This was done by placing salt inside and outside the corpse to remove any moisture. After this, fake eyes were inserted. The final stage is known to most of us, and involved wrapping the body in hundreds of meters of cloth.
Because mummification was a long and expensive process, usually only pharaohs and other rich, important people were mummified. Occasionally, though, sacred animals such as cats or bulls, were mummified for religious reasons.
Mummification might not make much sense to us now. It has, however, been very helpful in assisting researchers in finding out more about ancient Egyptian life. 41. Why did Ancient Egyptians preserve their dead through mummification? (A) They wanted the dead to live longer.
(B) They wanted their dead to enjoy the afterlife. (C) They were so in love with their dead.
