With the prices of gas rising and the wait in the security lines in the airport getting longer than ever, why not book your next vacation on a train? Train trips are comfortable, relaxing, and well organized. Here are some tips for making a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. That?s particularly true during the busy summer months. However, no matter when you travel, it?s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90 days in advance (and ideally sooner than that). Enlist (取得帮助) the assistance of a travel agent. Consider letting him or her double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes work out a lower fare and will know some tricks of the trade, such as booking you in a sleeping car that?s right next to the diner so you won?t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. If you?re riding in coach, you won?t get a free blanket, even if your trip is an overnight one. The temperature on a railway coach is hard to control, and in the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make people quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day (and some run only three times a week), so missing yours can be a bad thing. During busy times, train tickets are often sold out, so you might have to wait even longer than 24 hours to catch the next one. Notice whether the times listed on the schedules are departure times or arrival times. 41. Train trips are ________.
A. expensive B. comfortable and relaxing C. not easily organized D. tiring 42. What does the word “one” mean in the Paragraph 3?
A. a sleeping car B. a train C . a travel agent D. a schedule 43. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. It?s not urgent to make a reservation before a train trip. B. If you miss a trip, you can catch the next one soon. C. In summer, you don?t have to bring a blanket. D. A good travel agent can save you money. Passage Two
A mother in Myanmar (缅甸) says her baby girl?s 12 fingers and 14 toes have been no
disadvantage—her grasp may even be stronger than normal—and now she?s grasping for a Guinness World Record (吉尼斯世界纪录).
Phyo Min Soe, 26, knew her girl Le Yati Min had a little something extra since nearly the moment she was born. “I asked the nurses whether my kid was born complete with hands and legs,” says her mother. “They replied that the baby even has more than she needs.”
Le lives with her family in a small wooden house on the outskirts of the Southeast Asian country?s former capital of Yangon, where she runs around with seven toes on each foot.
Proud mom Phyo Min Soe said Tuesday that she?d be happy to see Le gain a world record, but even without that, her daughter already has a happy life, and even some natural advantages. “She seems to have a stronger grip (紧握) on things—so she doesn?t drop things much,” she says, as Le plays nearby with a mobile phone.
Now, the 16-month-old girl?s family is very poor and Myanmar is seeking a Guinness World Record to improve their financial situation. According to the Guinness World Records website, the record for most fingers and toes for a living person is currently held by two people in India, who have 12 fingers and 13 toes each.
Dr. Craig Camasta, a surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, said many parents of babies with extra fingers or
toes choose to have an operation to get rid of the extra fingers or toes to avoid social problem, but “It?s not necessary that the extra fingers or toes be emoved,” the doctor said. 44. Le Yati Min is a girl _______.
A. who is 26 years old B. with 12 fingers and 13 toes C. with 12 fingers and 14 toes D. who lives with her family in Yangon 45. Which one of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The Guinness World Record for most fingers and toes for a living person has been held by two Indian people so far.
B. The people with extra fingers or toes can be looked down upon by others. C. The young mother is upset to her daughter.
D. Dr. Craig Camasta suggests that the extra fingers or toes must be removed. 46.What?s the girl?s condition like? A. Her family is poor.
B. Her family has got a Guinness World Record. C. She is quite sad about her extra fingers and toes. D. She can?t walk well because of her extra toes. Passage Three
Broadcast technicians set up, operate, and maintain equipment that regulates (调节) the signal strength, clarity, and range of sounds and colors of radio or television broadcasts. They also operate control panels (控制面板) to select the source of the material. Technicians may switch from one camera or studio to another, from film to live programming, or from network to local programming. The best way to prepare for a broadcast and sound engineering technician job is to obtain technical school, community college, or college training in electronics, computer networking, or broadcast technology.
Beginners learn skills on the job from experienced technicians and supervisors. They often begin their careers in small stations and, once experienced, move on to larger ones. Large stations usually hire only technicians with experience. Many employers pay tuition and expenses for courses or seminars (研讨会) to help technicians keep abreast (跟上,不落后) of developments in the field. Broadcast and sound engineering technicians and radio operators must have smart hands and a talent for working with electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems and equipment. A college degree in engineering is needed in order to become a chief engineer at a large television station. 47. Broadcast technicians will not be responsible for ___________.
