Some people are not good at remembering the direction. And I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circle and

3

hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid(避免) giving people wrong directions. If anyone asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the

Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight! 49. The writer always refuses to give people directions because _______. A. she is a stranger to the city B. she doesn’t know the people C. she has no time to help others D. she’s afraid of giving wrong directions. 50. A man stopped the writer on the way to _______. A. ask for the directions B. ask for the time C. make friends with her D. sell her something 51. The Friendship Building is the place where the writer _______. A. lives B. studies C. works 52. From the passage, we can infer(推测) that _______. A. the writer felt sorry for not showing the man the way B. the writer knew she would see the man again C. the writer and the man knew each other well D. the writer used to be good at giving directions

A year ago, I made a decision to let my son choose his costume(服装) for Halloween. He chose Daphne instead of Scooby Doo. A few parents at his school hated his clothes very much. I wrote a blog(博客) about it on the Internet, and in a very short time, my article got 47,000 comments(评论) and it led to a national discussion about gender identity(性别认同).

My son loved Scooby Doo, the cartoon very much, but he had already dressed up as Scooby Doo, the dog, for the past Halloween. So last year the good choice to him was Daphne---oange wig(假发), a purple dress---He couldn’t get much more fun than that.

However, the rest of the world, starting with some of the mothers at his school, saw things differently. The moms were upset because I let him wear the clothes to school. Someone even called the police station where my husband worked and asked them to take my child away just because of the clothes.

It is certainly parents’ job to teach children, but I think it’s OK for children to be different and they can learn something from the differences. My son loved this photo of him dressed as Daphne very much and he often tells the story of dressing like Daphne for the last Halloween. This year, my son made the bold decision to dress up as... Elsa, the main character in a cartoon named Frozen. Does he worry about last year’s discussion will happen again this year? Of course not. He is only 6. If someone says that it is a “girl” costume, I believe he will say, “What do you care? It’s just a costume, not for a boy or a girl. Just a set of clothes.” And that is true.

Hiphop Planet

You can find Hiphop everywhere you go. Countries like France, Brazil and even Japan have their own hiphop culture. But where did this strange speaking singing style come from? Many centuries ago, in West Africa, traditional storytellers played musical instruments(乐器) while they were telling stories. When this tradition travelled from West Africa to the USA, it developed into different musical styles, such as blues and jazz. ___①___ And in the 1970s, there were many poor areas in New York. There wasn’t any money for the music lessons in schools, so kids made their own music. Teenagers from America and DJs here played their records outside in the streets. Everybody joined in. They had rapping(说唱) competitions. Every week, there were talented new dancers and new DJs. That is now hiphop was born.

Once in 1980, I was at a party in New York. There was a young DJ at the party. He was playing records. While he was putting a record on, a kid picked up a microphone(话筒) and began records. Some other kids were break-dancing to the music. It was loud and boring, and I hated it. I preferred jazz.

During the 1980s, hiphop became popular all over the USA. Today’s successful American artists like Missy and her friend Tim heard it on the radio when they were growing up.

The last time I heard hiphop, I was in West Africa. I was writing a book about African-Americans. I was going to interview a traditional storyteller when I met a young hiphop artist. He told me there are hundreds of rap groups in Africa today. We live on a hiphop planet. 57. Where was hiphop born? A. America. B. Japan. C. France. D. West Africa. 58. Which sentence is the best choice for ___①___? A. I remember the first time I heard hiphop.

B. Many Americans gave music lessons to poor children.

C. These styles all started in poor African-American areas. D. Some people don’t like hiphop because of its spoken words. 59. When did hiphop become popular in America? A. In the 1970s. B. In the 1980s. C. In the 1990s. D. In 1980. 60. What does the underlined sentence “ We live on a hiphop planet.” mean? A. Everyone likes singing hiphop.

B. There are hundreds of different styles in hiohop. C. Many famous artists are fans of hiphop.

D. People can find hiphop no matter where they go.
