第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题;每小题2分,满分50分)
第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。
A
The first two stages in the development of civilized man were probably the invention of weapons and the discovery of fire, although nobody knows exactly when he acquired the use of the latter.
The origin of language is also difficult to understand. No doubt it began very gradually. Animals have a few cries that serve as signals, but even the highest apes (猿) have not been found able to pronounce words, even with the most intensive professional instruction. The superior brain of man is apparently a necessity for the mastering of speech. When man became intelligent enough, we must suppose that he gradually increased the number of cries for different purposes. It was a great day when he discovered that speech could be used for describing and telling stories. There are those who think in this respect picture language appeared before oral language. A man could draw a picture on the wall of his cave to show in which direction he had gone, or what prey he hoped to catch. Probably picture language and oral language developed side by side. I prefer to think that language has been the most important single factor in the development of man.
Two important stages came not so long before the dawn of written history. The first was the domestication (驯化) of animals. The second was agriculture. Agriculture was a step in human progress to which there was nothing comparable until our own machine age. Agriculture made possible a huge increase in the number of the human species in the regions where it could be successfully practiced. These were, at first, only those in which nature fertilized the soil after each harvest. Agriculture met with violent resistance from the pastoral nomads (游牧民族), but the agricultural way of life was accepted in the end because of the physical comforts it provided.
Another fundamental technical advance was writing, which, like spoken language, developed out of pictures, but as soon as it had reached a certain stage, it was possible to keep records and transmit information to people who were not present when the information was given.
These inventions and discoveries—fire, speech, weapons, domestic animals, agriculture, and writing—made the existence of civilized communities possible. From about 3000 B. C. until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution less than two hundred years ago there was no technical advance comparable to these. During this long period man had time to become accustomed to his technique, and to develop the beliefs and political organizations appropriate to it. There was, of course, a big extension in the area of civilized life. At first it had been confined to the Nile, the Euphrates, the Tigris and the Indus, but at the end of the period in question it covered much the greater

part of the inhabitable (适合居住的) globe. I do not mean to suggest that there was no technical progress during this long time; there was progress—there were even two inventions of very great importance, namely gunpowder and the compass—but neither of these can be compared in their power to such things as speech and writing and agriculture.
41. According to the above passage, we can conclude that ________.
A. the use of fire and the domestication of animals made agriculture possible B. progress was probably very slow when language first came into being C. gunpowder and the compass are as important as speech in history D. communication is the most important factor for human development 42. According to the article, agriculture ________.
A. was accepted as soon as it appeared B. is as great a step forward as our machine age
C. helped improve the techniques of domestication D. at first helped make the land more suitable for crops 43. From the article we can learn that ________.
A. weapons and agriculture are what speech and physical comforts are based on B. the origin of the language can be clearly understood by studying apes’ behaviors C. the reason why animals have no language may be that they are not clever enough D. the agricultural way of life helps a lot in the development of written language 44. Which is the right order of the appearance of the following things (a to e)? a. agriculture b. weapons
c. domestication of animals d. written language
e. political organizations A. c, a, d, b, e B. e, b, c, d, a C. b, a, c, d, e D. b, c, a, d, e 45. Which of the following is the best title of the article? A. The Development of Civilization B. Speech and Civilization C. The Origin of Language D. The First Two Stages

This picture dictionary is intended to introduce children to basic words and concepts. It begins with four pages that show the mischievous monkey receiving the book as a birthday present and learning to use it. The pages that follow have six words each and include abstract ideas such as ―far,‖ ―some,‖ and ―before.‖ The definitions are provided through pictures and simple sentences (although some terms, like ―ant,‖ ―bag,‖ and ―dress,‖ have only a picture).

When a word has two meanings, for example, ―can‖ and ―wave,‖ it has two entries: ―The beans are in a can‖ and ―George can paint.‖ Illustrations are done in the style of H. A. Rey’s work. This book has use as a resource to introduce the idea of a dictionary, and kids may learn some new words in the process. But from the library shelf, they’re likely to choose the traditional stories instead. My Answer is No ... If That's Okay With You
Are you afraid you’ll hurt the people you care about if you say NO to them? Can you set limits when employees neglect their responsibilities? How about with your boss? When friends ask you to do something you don’t want to do, do you invent an elaborate (精心准备的) excuse? Do you have a hard time saying NO to an invitation even when you’re completely exhausted? Do you have trouble even practicing the sentence ―No, Mom, I just can’t make it home this holiday‖? If any of these scenarios (情况) sound familiar, keep reading - you need this book... No is a very simple word -- two letters, one syllable. Yet many women have a hard time saying it without feeling anxious or guilty. ―In My Answer Is NO...If That’s Okay with You,‖ award-winning psychiatrist (精神病学家) and author Dr. Nanette Gartrell takes a fresh look at why even the most powerful, accomplished, and successful women find it difficult to say no and offers a revolutionary approach to setting limits without harming important relationships.

Wild ducks and other birds could be important carriers of deadly bird flu, researchers say. Even so, experts say there is no solid basis for killing wild birds to protect poultry (家禽) and reduce the risk of human infection. The European team researching into the global spread of the H5N1 bird flu says certain duck species may be infecting wild bird populations. Geese and water birds are also possible vectors (带菌者)of the virus, the team says.
The team’s study was led by Bj?rn Olsen of Umea University in Sweden. Olsen runs Europe’s largest wild-bird flu monitoring program.
Studies have shown that bird flu viruses in lake water, generally passed through bird waste, can stay infectious for up to 30 days. The migration or feeding behavior of dabbling ducks could at least partly explain the spread of the H5N1bird flu, the researchers add.
This group of duck species includes mallards, pintails, and others that feed at or near the surface, where
