A.B. Paterson and the Man from Snowy River
Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Austrian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong, New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson’s notable poems include “Waltzing Matilda”, “The Man from Snowy River” and “Clancy of the Overflow”.①
Here I want to mainly analysis “The Man from Snowy River”. The poem tells the story of a horseback pursuit to recapture the colt of a prizewinning racehorse that escaped from it’s paddock and is living with the wild horses of the mountain ranges. Eventually the brumbies descend a seemingly impassibly steep slop, at which point the assembled riders give up the pursuit, except the young hero, who spurs his “pony” (horse) down the “terrible descent” to catch the mob.
The poem describes and eulogizes strength and courage and also praises the vitality of the youth. The strength and courage represent the national spirit, which make pioneers get success for fighting with severe nature. Next, the poem has bright Australian feature. The jungle, meadow eucalyptus and so on in the poem that are made of the special Australian environment. And in the poem, the writer eulogizes the mate ship, adaptability and risk-taking. And mate ship now has become the life creeds. Then, the special technique of expression in the poem. The writer used the “cat and mouse”, “setting” to depict the brave snowy man. Before catching the wild horse, cracks doubt his power because he is a small and weedy stripling.② Only Clancy stood his friend and beg for him, so they let him with them reluctantly. When the wild horses held their way right into the deep gorges, even the experienced old man muttered fiercely, “We may bid the mob good, no man can hold them down the other side.”③ When they plan to give up (writer uses the antithesis0, the man from Snowy River let the pony have his head and followed like a bloodhound on their track. He alone unassisted brought the wild horse back, because his pluck was undaunted, and his courage fiery hot. So the young image from Snowy River in front of us was venerable. Besides, the whole poem vividly depicted the intense action, breathtaking scene, grand and magnificent situation and give us a sense of strength. ①②
