The elevator would be a smooth 62,000?mile ride up a long cable. Payloads(货物)can shake up the Earth?to?space cable, experiencing no large launch forces, slowly climbing from one atmosphere to space.?
Science fiction writers have been mentioning space elevators for years. Somecall it a “thought experiment\—“Before Cable\—will pale compared with what's possible within ten tofifteen years.?
Eards told SPACE. comthat he's been wrapped up ispace elevator work for some three years, supported by NIAC program. “I'm convinced that the space elevator is practical and doable.\15 years we could have a doen cables running at top speed putting 50 tons in spaceevery day for even less, including upper middle class individuals wanting a joyride(观光) intospace. For a space elevator to function, a cable with one end attached(锚定)to the Earth's surface stretches upwards, reaching beyond Earth orbit. The cable remains unmoving over a single position on Earth. This cable, once in position, can be lifted from Earth by machines, right into Earth orbit. The hardest challenge has been finding a super?strong cable material. “That's what has kept this idea in science fiction for 40 years,\Eards said. “But the right cable stuff is no longer thought of as ?unoainium'(无法得到),\?nanotube?composite ribbon.(碳纳米管合成缆绳).?

Open Your Eyes And Let's See Who You Are
Inventors have developed a new way to identify people, using a machine that scanstheir eyeballs.Developed by IriScan, this new technology takes advantage of the fact that the iris(虹膜)of each person's eye is unique, and remains unchanged throughout a lifetime. The process will replace an older technology called retina(视网膜) identification, which compared the picture in the back of the eye.Used to control access to nuclear weapons, retina identification has never caught on with the public because it requires the user to put their eyeball right up against a lens.Iris scanning,on the other hand, works from a distance.
The iris of the eye is photographed from up to one meter away. The patterns of the iris are translated in to digital code, and stored in a PC database, along with personal information.Glasses and contact lenses(隐形眼镜) do not interfere with the scanning process, and it takes only a brief moment.
The new technology will be useful for banking and police work,as well as for theInternet economy. Before long, your computer monitor may be equipped with an irisscanner that can identify you when you shop online, thus preventing fraud(欺诈).

Controlled fires sometimes burn out of control. The fire in this story was in Northern California last July.A Bureau of Land Management crew started it.They wanted to burn brush(灌木),which might burn. The winds blew the fire out of control.About 2,000 acres and 23 homes burned. People wondered why they did a burn in these kinds of conditions. The area had a week of over a hundreddegree weather, and it had been windy for a whole week. The government said the Bureau of Land Management was at fault. It failed to look at the weather. Moreover,it didn't have a backup plan to protect homes inside the controlled burn area. The BLM(Bureau of Land Management) quickly admitted it was their fault and started paying the owners of the homes.
This should have been a lesson to the people who set the fires. It is very risky.A sudden change in the wind can make the fire burn out of control.
However, fire managers say many years of keeping fire from burning on public lands means they are ready to burn.Fire scientists think these systems are going to burns anyway. In the past these forests burned every four, five, seven, eight years.
Two months ago the Los Angeles County Fire Department started using its new brushcrusher(灌木碾压机).It is a 10ton roller that stamps(压)down brush. This makes controlled burns easier. But fire

“I've changed my mind.I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back.\Lawrence's letter to Father Christmas written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart.Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn't see the stars inthe sky. When those who we love depart from us,we cannot see the stars for a while.
But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And,in a strange way,I expect that you willfind your father is there too,in your mind and in your heart.I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive.I still live to please them and I'm still surprised by their reactions.I remember that when I became a professor,I was so proud,or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn't wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did,all Mother said was“I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!\live on.
It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care.Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors(挑衅者),and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It's a serious thought, one to give me pause.
