Describe a place that you have been to that has a lot of water. You should say:
where this place is
what people do at this place
why (& when) you went there
and explain whether you like this place or not.
My hometown is famous for springs. In the centre of our city, there are a group of springs located together. They all flow
into one lower pool. People name itBlack Tiger Spring. It has become a symbol for my city and attracted crowds of local citizens and tourists.
Summer is the best time to visit the spring, especially on a hot day, because spring water makes the air cool down, plus there are trees providing shelters. All these have contributed to the popularity of this place. People living nearby like to come to fetch spring water. It’s also a paradise for fishing lovers. Old men could spend a whole morning there fishing. They seem to enjoy themselves a lot. At weekends, English learners come and get together to have English corner. Calligraphy lovers practice writing characters on the ground with a huge brush pen and spring water as ink.
A few decades ago, there were even more springs flowing. For one time, the rapid developing industries consumed a lot
of water. Some springs therefore become dry. However, in recent years, the local government has been working on reconstructing the city’s underground water system to make dried springs flow again. They did a good job. Springs now come back into our life.
I was there last July. It rained slightly that day, which made the trip kind of romantic, as you could see rain needles dipping into the water surface. I walked along the pool, feeling so peaceful in mind. I like the place, and I will go there again.
Part 3 Water Usage
Do you think people use more water today than they did before (e.g., 20 or 50 years ago)?
I think so. First of all, industry is the largest user of water. We are now having more industries. Industry requires a great amount of water. So, more water is being used. The second largest user of water is domestic use. People use more, drink more, and most sadly, waste more.
Do you think it's important to try to save (conserve) water? (Why?)
It is of vital importance for human beings to save water. We need water – our lives depend on it. We all know that the world’s population is getting larger day by day. More water is being consumed. At the same time, there are many places on this world where people are suffering from lack of drinking water. Water is a precious resource. It is urgent to save water from being wasted.
How can people save water?
Water conservation has two aspects: one, use water efficiently so that there is enough for the needs of all living things;
two, keep freshwater clean, so that it can continue to support life on Earth. As an ordinary citizen, I appreciate what my family does in saving water. We reuse used water. It’s simple. I’ve always believed that if every family devotes its own effort, water saving will no longer be a mission impossible.
What are the main ways that water is used in the home?
In the home we use water to brush teeth, to take a bath, to flush toilets, to wash face and hands, to wash dishes and clothes, to shave legs, to prepare food and clean up, and to drink.
Water Resources
What water resources do you think are most important for protection and conservation?
Freshwater is most important for protection and conservation. More than two thirds of the Earth is covered by water but
less than 1% is freshwater – 97% is too salty and the rest is ice. No one would disagree with me on this issue. I am sure about this. Obviously, without water, people cannot live.
What measures do you suggest the government could do to protect these resources?
Government should make laws against water wasting and pollution. As for factories, they should be forbidden from
pouring industrial waste into rivers. Otherwise they will get sever punishment. It is the government’s responsibility to educate the community about how to save water and encourage consumers to be water efficientin the home andgarden, in business andat school.
Is the way people use water today the same as the way people used to use water, say, 50 years ago?
I should sayNO. In the past, water doesn’t seem to be a problem. People don’t usually suffer from lack of fresh water. But
now it is a problem. As a result, people are becoming increasingly conscious of water being a precious resource. Water-saving washing machines have been produced; the idea of water recycling gets popular among families; water-saving is seen as a good virtue.
What are the reasons for water shortages in (parts of ) China?
There are both geographical and humans’ reason for water shortage in parts of China. Geographically, there is imbalance
among areas in terms of rainfall. Places with less rainfall are more likely to suffer from water shortage. For the human beings’ part, big cities with large population consume huge amount of water every day. This could cause water shortage, too.

Describe an organization (such as a company, a factory, a government organization or a student organization at school). You should say:
where this organization is
how you know about this organization what this organization does and explain how you feel about it.
I joined the Youth Volunteer Association (YVA) of my university when I was a junior. I have benefited a lot from that experience.
There are manystudent organizationsin my university. At the beginning of every new semester, there is a big
day for all those clubs and associations torecruit. I joined the YVA because I wanted to help others. To my understanding, just like what I said at the recruitment interview, being a volunteer means totake out my personal timeto do something for others.
My first volunteering experience was to give English lessons to residents from a neighourhood. Due to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, more people are willing to learn some basic English. I major in English, so I think maybe I could help these people with myexpertise. We did it every weekend and kept doing it for almost three months. I not only gave lessons to people, more importantly, I communicated with them. Many of them are older than me. They come from all walks of life. They brought to class different life stories. I exchanged my school experiences with their social experiences. Sharing with them has added to my insight into the world I am living in,which was a good thingfor someone like me who did not have much access to the real world outside school campus.
My association offers the young good chance to be helpful, to get to know more people, to learn something that’s not written on the text book. Part 3
Working in an Organization
What would you prefer to work in, a big organization or a small one?
If I were a graduate freshly out of school, I would prefer to work in a big organization. Big organizations have advantages that small organizations don’t. As a new graduate, I cherish very much the future development opportunity that big organizations could offer. If I worked for many years, I would prefer to work in small organizations. They are less strict with the employees. They give me more space to turn my ideas into reality. What are the benefits of working in a small organization?
It’s more flexible in terms of rules and limitations. People can create their own organization culture. With fewer people working for it, every one is important, every one’s voice can be heard. Besides, it’s easier for a small group of people to reach on an agreement on some issues. It cuts down the time organizations spend on decision making, which is a very good thing in today’s time-racing world.
What are the benefits of working for a big organization?
Working for a big organization makes me feel proud. I feel safer-I mean they cannot fire me any time they want to without giving a sound reason, unless I do something terribly wrong and cause great loss. It’s true that big organizations have countless rules and regulations. They seem quite a burden some time. But if I work hard and successfully finish every piece of task given by my boss, I will be approved and get what I deserve. Rules and regulations not only punish people, but also push us to work harder. Industries
What kind of work do people do in your hometown?
People do all kinds of work in my hometown. Teachers, businessmen, company employees, factory workers, doctor...the list is endless, as the economy develops all the time and every day there is new job opportunity. Economy development has cultivated many new jobs, such as hourly-paid workers, baby sitters for babies and for the old, private finance adviser etc.
What service industries are there in your hometown?
Our city is a famous tourist destination. We benefit a lot from tourism. With the development of tourism, hotel and restaurant business grows rapidly. Entertainment has also become an industry in recent few years. Traditional art forms have been replaced by modern art shows. Public transportation is another major service industry. The local government encourages its citizens to take public transport rather than driving private cars to work and school. What is the government doing to protect the environment (from industrial pollution produced by these factories)? The local government works a lot on developing public transportation. They produce more comfortable buses. They cut down bus ticket price in order to attract more commuters. This policy has greatly decreased the number of private cars running on the road. Therefore, air pollution is kept under control. At the same time, the government has made and carried out new policies to stop people spitting on the street or smoking in public places. I am totally for these policies.
