questions. For each question there are 4 choices marked A), B), C), and D). Choose the ONE answer that best completes each sentence.

Passage 1

Along with the development of the global awareness, “sustainability” is considered to be a crucial element in any event. Olympic Games are of no exception.

The idea of sustainability came with the Centennial Olympic Congress, held in Paris in 1994. This event drew people’s attention to the importance of both the environment and sustainable development, and then a new page was added to the Olympic Charter which stated the International Olympic Committee’s responsibility to promote the idea of sustainability alongside sport and culture.

While green concerns are still something new of an Olympic spirit, they are accepted—gradually, widely and completely—by the IOC, the public as well as the host. The time for more transparent and sustainable games has come.

The first few Olympics after 1994 tried to meet the environmental requirements cautiously, and it was in 2000 that the IOC enjoyed its “Green September.” When the Sydney games opened that month, they were viewed as the first “Green Games.” The government had promised to clean up nearby Homebush Bay; designers had spared no efforts to specify eco-friendly materials;

recycling bins spread everywhere; and the solar-roofing industry developed fast along with the Olympic Games. Thanks largely to promotion from activists, major sponsors including Coca-Cola and McDonald’s also agreed to choose less harmful freezing units (as a result, Coke actually changed its global freezing policy). But even then, some problems arose: it was hard to ignore the fact that Homebush Bay was considered one of the world’s poisonous hotspots. Debate focused on how many venues should be taken down to allow redevelopment.

As it is Sustainability’s hometown, we closely watched the development of London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid, and have high hopes for that event. Besides having sustainable thinking in every aspect of the games, from siting to event management to media coverage, the 2012 Olympics are focusing on recycling usage of the venues and hoping to use the games to showcase how mega-cities can effectively deal with environmental and social challenges.

Some corporation might take the social responsibility into consideration. They may still think about their reputation when deciding whether or not to get involved in the games, but there is a huge potential upside. The final test of this new Olympic spirit—sustainability—will be whether the 2012 onward Olympics can play the role of an initiator that can make life in Olympic cities more livable. If they do, they will not only help the entire Olympics movement grow, and they will also evolve into a powerful driver of market change. 51. What’s something new of an Olympic spirit?

A. Swiftness. B. Gold medals. C. Green concerns. D. Culture. 52. Which country hosted the first “Green Olympics”?

A. China. B. Australia. C. France. D. Canada.

53. Why did people closely watch the development of London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid?

A. Because London was the first city to propose the idea of sustainability. B. Because London had the best designers of the world. C. Because London was one of the mega-cities.

D. Because London could effectively deal with environmental and social challenges.

54. When they decided whether or not to get involved in the games, some corporations might think about their _________.

A. sustainability B. reputation C. responsibility D. potential 55. What will the 2012 Olympics focus on?

A. European culture and history. B. Recycling usage of the venues

C. Siting and new infrastructure. D. Siting to event management and media coverage.

Passage 2

There are many links between the growing population and worsening environment, partly because an ever-increasing number of people depend on a fixed natural resource base in order to live.

“The United Nations predicts that the global population, presently at 6 billion, will peak at about 10 billion in the next century and then become stable and even decrease.” It is understandable that even if food crops increase sufficiently, other renewable resources, including many fisheries and forests, are already under pressure. “Our food production doubled from 1961 to 1964, but there are still people who go hungry”. This is because human population has increased more rapidly than the food production. Resources are an important environmental concern, which range from water and soil to different kinds of minerals. These materials are very basis of modern civilization.

As the world population grows, demand for mineral and energy resources climbs. Resources are commonly divided into two groups. Some are classified as renewable, which means they can be replenished over relatively short time spans such as water, sun. By contrast, many other resources are classified as non-renewable. Important metals such as iron, copper fall into this group. Although these and other resources continue to form, the processes that create tem are so slow that significant deposits take millions of years to come into being.

How long will the remaining supplies of basic resources last? Can alternatives be found? If we are to cope with an increasing demand and a growing world population, it is important that we have some understanding of our present and potential resources.

56. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ______ A. worsening environment is related to growing population. B. A lot of renewable resources are already under pressure. C. Water and soil is not an environment concern.

D. demand for mineral and energy resources is rising with the growing population. 57. What do we learn from “Our food production doubled from 1961 to 1964, but there are still people who go hungry”? ______ A. There is not enough food in the world.

B. The human population has increased rapidly. C. Food production is too small. D. People can’t get food to eat.

58. Which of the following resources is NOT mentioned in this passage? ______ A. Water and soil B. Mineral C. Electricity D. Metals

59. Some resources are classified as non-renewable because ______ A. if they are used up they will disappear forever. B. the processes that create them are very slow. C. they are not available any more.

D. they can be replenished over relatively short time spans.

60. What’s the author’s attitude toward the issue of the resources? ______ A. Worried B. Indifferent C. Positive D. Negative

Passage 3

America is in no immediate danger of “running out of water”. People in the West have been aware that water is a precious commodity and must be conserved. In the damp East, an excess of water led to complacency until two factors created concern over our water supply. First, the periods of drought from the 1961 to 1966 in the Northeast affected crop production and used up the surface and ground water supplies. Second, attention was called to rapid increases in the rates of pollution of these waters resulting from increased urban and industrial growth. As a result, there is an increasing awareness of the need for conserving the quantity and quality of our nation’s water supplies.

Water is a renewable resource, but it is not exhaustible. When used for municipal,
